Things that make me twinge-y (like sad/emotional twinge-y)

1.  In the changeroom at the Y this morning, one black woman goes up to another black woman and this exchange happens:
person #1:  hi, my name is xxx.
person #2:  hi, xxx, I'm yyy.
person #1:  Did you have a good workout today?
person #2:  yeah, it was okay.
person #1:  good. I just wanted to ( Read more... )

Penguins! It made me kinda happy to see that what people protested was taking the eggs away!

Happy Tuesday. I'm all twitchy & anxious, so I kinda know how you feel.

Me too - I anthropomorphize everything so I had this image of 2 gay daddies with their kids taken away and it made me sad. I love how the gay penguins throw the idea of sexual orientation in the natural world into flux. We read a great article on this in "women & society"; it talked about how queer animals are much more common than we think but scientists have trouble funding their research to prove it.

Happy Tuesday to you - you'll do fine...

Eeep-- at the whiteness of your community. That exchange is pretty telling.

And sorry to hear your dog got so frightened at the groomer. It sounds like she was really worked up. :-( I hope she's feeling better now.

And hooray for more penguins with flexible family compositions!

Exactly. My city is pretty white and the Y is usually really white, except for the kids of colour who play basketball in the gym. It might be the time I go though. 9:30am-11:30am - tends to attract retired folks, students and shift work people. It was one of those 'reminders of white privilege' moments ala Peggy McIntosh... "I can go to my gym and see white people who look like me".

We've hypothesized that the dog got soap in her eyes. Her eyes are very bloodshot. At first I thought they were just irritated with the chemicals and dryers but it's been 7 hours and they're still very red. I can't imagine what else could have happened to freak her out.

Just the thought of gay penguins makes me feel all squishy.

I'm really impressed by #5. I've heard some stories of family holiday insanity already this season; your family sounds pretty chill about it.

I'm kinda surprised it went over as well as it did. I think because my sister *and* I pushed it, my parents had to comply ;)

However, this would NEVER go over with my extended family. My mom tried to float the charity idea to my aunt/cousins and it didn't fly; we're doing a gift card exchange instead. Seriously, who says no to donating to charity?
