Just catching up on The River - watching eps 1 & 2.
I'm 20 mins in and my initial thoughts are:

a/ ABC is SO trying to re-create Lost;

b/ It's very Heart-of-Darkness-y and I'm worried it's going to replicate all sorts of problematic colonial tropes such as "going native", "mystical Global South", mystical-spiritual woman of colour, all the bad haunt-y ( Read more... )

Things that make me twinge-y (like sad/emotional twinge-y)

1.  In the changeroom at the Y this morning, one black woman goes up to another black woman and this exchange happens:

Okay, so I first heard about Twilight back very early this year.  I kept seeing icons of Twilight and, since I'm usually up on popular tv shows/films I was perplexed when I couldn't figure out what it was.  Who knew people were iconing a movie that had yet to come out?  Eventually, I got it.  ( Read more... )

My partner and I saw Role Models last night.  It wasn't a particularly good movie, I think the outtakes and ad-libbing are probably much funnier than the dialogue that made it into the film.  Paul Rudd continues to be amazing, and gets more attractive as he ages.  But, that's not the point of this post.

This weekend my dad came to visit.  He drove me back on Friday and stayed until today.  He came to help with some home repair tasks.  I'm most pleased that we are now 3/3.

I was about to write this long(ish) response in broken_records 's LJ but then I thought I'd just post it here instead.  If you aren't watching Friday Night Lights, there is something wrong with you :)  Okay, on to the thoughts which I'll LJ cut for those of you watching it on NBC (where S3 won't air until 2009).

looks like we're up for another federal election in October -
