Harriet Miers Questionnaire

Oct 21, 2005 16:11

Don’t get me wrong . . . I do not believe that Harriet Miers is a good candidate for our highest court. Actually I do not believe she is a good candidate for any court. Yet, I have a question. The Harriet Miers questionnaire that everyone is talking about is not signed by her. It is unsigned. Thus, how do we know it was actually submitted by

supreme court of the united states

1. We went over this already, pretty recently. It would be courteous to the people in here who are not from the US for you to edit your post to read "the highest court in the US."

2. Which questionnaire do you mean? I seem to remember some comment about her filling something out that suggested she wasn't as opposed to gay rights here as one might think, but I'm not sure if that's what you're asking about. Is that what you mean?

there was a questionnaire published in quite a few newspapers (in the US, as far as i know) that she filled out...sort of like an extended resume with various perfunctory questions thrown in. she's apparently filled it out twice and both times it has been deemed insufficient by the us congress.

A word of warning - someone's probably going to attack you for this:

for our highest court - and for not explaing who Harriet Miers is every time you mention her (even though it's a simple google search away).

To see what I mean, see this post.

Not trying to be a jerk - just that with my experience reading in this community people often get attacked, rather than questioned (you sorta proved that point by calling me a jerk :-/). It saddens me. Fortunately, the replies so far have been cool and simply pointed out out that she could be more courteous. I can respect that.

My comment about the google thing - yeah, that was snarky. I'll admit it. Should've let that one go... sorry.

I thought by posting what I did, people would be less likely to attack/yell at her. If I take the heat for being a jerk, cool.

Thanks for pointing out my U.S.-centrism. Even the best intentioned feminist slips up and needs to be reminded of slips up. For those who do not know of Harriet Miers--She was nominated by U.S. President Bush to be the next member of the U.S. Supreme Court. Also, I am referring to the Texas for Life questionnaire--I should have been more clear.

There is more than one questionnaire -- the one getting the most press right now is the questionnaire given to Miers by the Senate Judiciary Committee (see NPR news story here), which was not completely/satisfactorily filled out. You can read the questionnaire & Miers' answers in their entirety here (that is a .pdf link).

The Texans United For Life questionnaire was handed over as part of the "application packet" (so-to-speak) that Miers handed over with the Senate Judiciary Committee's questionnaire. (Cite: this Washington Post article). I think that it's unlikely in the extreme that Miers would hand over such a document in this fashion if she wasn't the one who initially submitted the document.

To add to what everyone else said, perhaps her signature was taken off before it was posted everywhere? After all, that's somewhat personal.
