I know exactly what you are talking about. I have friends who watch Supernatural, and just take everything at face value. Like during Mystery Spot- one of my friends thought it was the funniest episode ever, and when I was like, "yeah, maybe for the viewer and Dean, but Sam was pretty upset." She was like, "oh yeah, I guess he kind of was, wasn't he?" And during scenes when Dean is all self sacrificing or whatever she just doesn't get it. She's like, "Dean isn't deep and emotional, I don't get why he is doing that..." and I'll try to explain that Dean was basically forced to take the role of father to Sam, while being a son, soldier, companion, and friend to John. That he feels responsible for everything, and he doesn't think he is ever good enough. How he thinks everyone is going to leave him, and that it's because he isn't good enough for them to want to stay with him. And she's just like, "huh? you really get all that? Even hubby, who is used to listening to me ramble about the boys and pretty much everything regarding my shows, said the other day "It kinda bugs me though that they are like these perfect heroes. Especially Dean has no flaws." And I'm like, "What show are you watching?"

I think being in fandom gives you insights you just don't get only watching for an hour and then tuning in to something else a minute later. In fandom you get fic exploring the reasons and feelings behind their actions, you get meta about it, you get picspams that catch every subtle facial expression they make. You discuss and speculate and learn things. You're not just a passive observer, you're a participant. And that makes all the difference.

LOL. Well, I didn't really have an issue with that, more the fact that she prejudged Jensen/Dean as a "froðu" character because she thought he used to be Jake or something on Melrose Place. Way to insult one of my boys!

FYI I also stood up for Jared when my sister said "But he was so boring on Gilmore Girls". Looking out for both my boys, I am. *nods*
