He did have a couple male companions in the original/classic series... off the top of my head, Harry, but Sarah Jane was traveling with them as well; and the second Doctor traveled with Jamie, but Zoe was traveling with them at the same time. So, I guess there have been male companions, but there's always a female companion in the TARDIS when that happens.
Actually the Doctor has travelled with quite a few guys from the very first doctor (William Hartnell) to the current one, being Matt smith of course. Altogther there has been 15 guys who have kinda travelled with the Doctor, they are:
Ian Chesterton, Steven Taylor, Ben Jackson, Jamie McCrimmon, Brigadire Lethbridge-Stewart, Harry Sullivan, Adric, Turlough, Chang Lee, Mickey Smith, Captain Jack, Adam Mithchell, Rory Williams, Sergant John Benton and Captain Mike Yates (although he didn't actually technically travel anywhere in the tardis).
