Hmmm. I'm only familiar with stuff that groups do. The only thing that came to mind (besides what you wrote) is an auction. Say, a church or other group you're involved in could auction off donated things (or services?) with the money going to your fund.

Right now, I'm toying with the idea of a dessert party--getting one or two others together, baking up a whole bunch of desserts, then having a tasting party at which people can give donations if they want.

Kickstarter or something like it? Or setting up a donations page somewhere so people can donate anonymously or not if they want to?

You're welcome. Kickstarter might not be exactly the right thing but another crowd funding type thing could be great for you. Good luck!
