Right. So within the year of S1, demons are becoming more common. "More and more demons are walking among us." But previous to S1, they weren't crawling out of the woodwork like they started to do durning S1.
And with Bobby's wife being possessed, you'd think that Bobby would have a vested interest in hunting demons specifically. But he wasn't hearing about a lot of possessions prior to S1.
Hmm, now, I'm not sure about that one. I'm remembering Sam, Dean and Bobby all being completely astounded by Ruby's knife in Mag7, and the line, "What kind of knife can kill a demon?", then Bobby saying, "Up until now I would have said there wasn't any such thing." We don't know that Jim and Bobby knew each other (for sure), but since they were both close to John, one would assume they'd had contact of some sort. So would Jim have a demon-killing knife, yet Bobby had never heard of such a thing?
That's what I'm saying (sort of). With the scarcity of demons on which to try the thing out, we don't know that it would have killed Meg. But Jim obviously thought it would do some serious damage, because that's the weapon he went for. And since Meg caught it, we'll never know.
It might even have been something of Jim's own devising. And I'm fairly certain it would have been forgotten between the time "Salvation" was written and shot, and when "Mag7" was written. There was a whole season intervening, and Pastor Jim only got a handful of mentions (three, by my count), so it's not surprising that the writers would forget about it.
But watching the scene last night, I was surprised to notice that Jim when for a special dagger with etchings on it, in an attempt to thwart Meg.
Make of it what you will. It's just a bit of throw-away trivia that caught my attention last night.
It's good trivia and something that I have brought up before a few times. (I'd leave links but am on my phone.) John knew Jim because he was an expert in demonology and he also met Caleb and the Harvelles through Jim. He met Bobby likely because of their shared past in demons killing their wives and due to Bobby's reputation as a good source for supplies... But they never really got along and Bobby did and had lots of things that John considered too risky or dangerous, per the whole shotgun dismissal when they last saw each other. I often wondered if many of the things in John's storage unit were actually items he "removed without permission" from Bobby's to try to keep him safer.
This is information from outside the show, yeah? 'Cause the show doesn't allude to any of this. It makes for an interesting chain of relational events, though
