My icons and artworks for Summer of Giles

Jun 25, 2016 09:29

Yesterday was the first of my two posting days at Summer of Giles, and to make things interesting, I created icons and artworks for our favorite Watcher this time around.

My life has been rather crazy lately, and large contiguous chunks of free time for writing were the first to go out the window. But the wonderful thing about image editing is ( Read more... )

True. It's more relaxing to be working on something pretty. :)

Lessons learned would be great.

I tend to use a stylus for most arting on a phone/tablet. Even a "dumb" stylus makes things hugely easier. And there are some really fancy tricks available in things like Autodesk Sketchbook. There aren't a lot of 1 button automatic features like photoshop has, but if you understand the steps involved you can still get very neat effects. The transform tool is... Spiffy. And the text tool has a lot of capability.

Most of the time tho since I'm on iThings I'm using procreate. Less crashy.

D'oh! A stylus would've worked well!

I've never used Autodesk Sketchbook. I'm OK in Illustrator, but honestly never quite needed it for my purposes. I rarely draw from scratch, only need to enhance an existing photo. What capabilities does the text tool in Autodesk Sketchbook have? I'm impressed with Photoshop can do when it comes to text, actually. When I need fancy layout, I rely on InDesign.

I'll put together a post on lessons learned. Might be rather basic stuff, but I'm happy to share. :)

I haven't dug into the text tool in a big way, but it can handle lettering for comics which isn't always easy as a kerning problem.

I think the stuff Photoshop offers on aThings and iThings differs. Not sure? I'm pretty clueless about a lot of aspects of photo editing coz it's easier to get it right in camera than fix it later. Tho drawing is getting me better at layers slowly, and layers tend to be pretty handy for photos too.

And I figure basics are ALWAYS useful. Stuff I see as basic other people might see as really advanced and vice versa. And the mobile tools aren't always documented well.

It's been a decade since I last compared different versions of Photoshop, and that was back when it was still shrinkwrapped software. It's all online now. I have no idea if there are variations ( ... )
