Fic: Wishbone (Spike&Dawn, Spike/Buffy, Rated G)

Jul 09, 2015 20:58

I started this for sb_fag_ends on a March 2015 prompt: “wishbone”, then abandoned it while the Muse went on a walkabout. This month's prompt "day and night" got me back to this story. You see, it takes place at the end of the day, as the prompt says:

Title: Wishbone

Pairing: Spike&Dawn, Spike/Buffy

Continuity: Sometime after the events of “The Gift”.
Prompt: ( Read more... )

spike&dawn, btvs, buffy/spike, btvs6, dawn, one-shot, spike, comm: sb_fag_ends, ficlet, rating: g, ficlicious, challenges

This was so touching, a beautiful little vignette and a very believable one. You did an excellent job evoking that special bond between Spike and Dawn.

Thank you! I'm very fond of Spike&Dawn. I think it's the most tangible part of Spike's love for Buffy in the beginning.

Oh dear god, that last line. It's excellent. Sort of funny, but really - not.

Oh dear god, that last line. It's excellent. Sort of funny, but really - not. Oh exactly! This story is lovely, it's cute in it's own particular way but - not schmoopy, cloying or maudlin as a lot of these sorts of tales tend to be, with "Spike the perfect big brother" and Dawn the starry-eyed, somewhat infantilized girl who just ADORES him ( ... )

Awww, thank you, red_satin_doll. You really are too, too kind!

I see the Spike&Dawn relationship as something between a father/daughter relationship and a big brother/little sister relationship. There's fierce protectiveness on Spike's part, unwavering trust on Dawn's part, but they tease each other and genuinely gets along, like a couple of mates. (I think Spike sometimes shows the maturity of a teenager, so that helps.) :) There's some co-dependence in there too, since in Buffy's absence they're both relying on each other to live through just the next day, and the day after that. That shared pain becomes their source of mutual healing.

Dawn's no wilting flower, and the one person around whom Spike can relax and show his softer side. I love throwing them together to see what they'd do. I'm glad I managed to convey some of my love for Spike&Dawn in this little story. That's what every writer wants to hear! :)

It's perfect! I don't know how you do it, but you always find the most perfect way to write Dawn and Spike.
(And I bet, that despite all wise words, if the opportunity precented itself, Spike still would make that wish...)

Thanks, Restfield. It's my favorite friendship pairing.

I agree. Spike is the "do as I say, not as I do" type...
