Wish Child
Previous count - 1961 words
New count - 4507
New words - 2546

Woo! Except, I was aiming for around 3K - the story isn't finished yet and I'm already 1.5K over my planned limit.
Does this happen to other people? Do you aim for a story of a certain length, go over and then cut? Or do you manage to stick pretty much to the word count you set ( Read more... )

I already said this elsewhere, but nice job with the word count this weekend!

I usually don't start writing until I've dreamed the bones of the story, so most of the time I have a pretty good idea of what the word count will come to when fleshed out. If I know there's a word minimum and it's one above my average story, I do usually go over what I think I'll have because I get paranoid that I won't get there, and overcompensate. *wry grin*

For this one I had an idea; more of a one-sentence thought, really. Wrote it down and then just started writing. In a way, it was a bit like that game I sometimes played as a kid where one person did part of a drawing on a piece of paper, folded it over and then passed it to someone else to draw another bit, and so on. (And hopefully you ended up with something that looked like a beetle at the end of it - why was it always a beetle?)
I wrote a bit in my lunchbreak, then later wrote another bit with no real idea of how the bits were going to fit together so that at the end it would look like the story that initial sentence made me think of.

(I prefer, on reflection, to working with a plan rather than pantsing it.) :D
