I missed out on the first hour or so - started watching it as one of the M-nations (Monaco, perhaps?) was marching in. I liked the single dancer flying all over the fields of wheat.
I don't mind opera - I actually like it - but the lady singing the Olympic Hymn was gesturing too much for my taste. All that gesturing was a bit distracting, in fact.
Norwegian TV is showing highlights of the ceremony now, and I see the point about the National Anthem - it sounded like the arranger tried to make it a sort of pop ballad with funeral dirge elements. I think I prefer the West Wing version.
I know the singer is a jazz musician from Montreal, so I guess that probably went into the arrangement too. And really, her voice was beautiful! I got a chance to listen to it again last night, and liked it a little more on a second go-round, but still. NOT my national anthem!
I know I'm late to the party but feel obligated to say that French is also one of the official languages of the Olympics, so those complaining don't really have much of a leg to stand on there...
