We always told our kids when they needed to choose a profession that they should pick something they LOVE doing! It's so important you like to do your job as you need to do it the rest of your life!

My mother thought it far more important that I get a job that would make enough money to support her in the way she wanted when she was old.

Now she's old and I don't even talk to her.
Funny how plans work out...

1) My father was an engineer. My mother was the secretary to an engineering department before she married my father. It had more to do with income than anything else. She thought they made a lot of money, so wanted me to be one.
2) Agreed.
3) Excellent! I've always wanted to see Australia. Maybe some day I will.
4) Many years before I was born, but yes. He was engaged to two different women at the same time and had to flee the state with the one he picked. But, the house he grew up in was lost when my grandfather died in great debt. So, he was already out of Fairfax.
5) I agree!
