“So, you are not free tonight? How about tomorrow?” Kame muffled softly into the receiver trying to hide his disappointment from the rest of his group members. Of course he failed miserably. “It’s okay. I planned to go back to my parent’s house as well. Alright then, bye Jin.”

The room suddenly became gravely quiet and the atmosphere darkens. No one of their right mind would dare to disrupt the thick aura. Well, no one except the infamous KY guy of course. “So, are we going out for Christmas eve dinner?”

At that particular moment, the other three turned to the smiling guy in sync, throwing invisible dagger to him through their deathly stares. But of course the guy was immune to such notion; his smile was still as bright as ever.

And for some strange reason Kame responded to it “Where should we go? I want some chicken.”

Koki eyed the other suspiciously and about to query when he felt his ribs being nudged by the calm looking Ueda. Then Maru answered on his behalf “I know this cool restaurant. I’ve even made a reservation.”

“You’ll drive then” Koki suggested as all of them stood up eagerly.

***********

Apparently, Maru was a regular of the exquisite little restaurant. It was packed and such a surprise that they still managed to get a private room without a reservation, which Maru lied about earlier. Kame was indeed impressed with it. And he was not the only one who noticed it.

“I’m impressed. I never expected you to have this kind of connection” Koki remarked as the waiter went off with their orders.

“She even called you Maru-sama” Ueda retorted. “I mean I can understand if Kame pulls this kind of act, but you?”

Maru was grinning proudly “Koyama introduced this place.”

“Eh, I didn’t know you and Kei are in a relationship” Kame who was sitting next to Maru teased which the rest joined, laughing merrily.

The older guy quickly hit Kame on the shoulder “Of course not. It was after one of SC recording which ended quite early and we thought of having supper before going back.”

“So did you go back together or separately” Junno unexpectedly joined in.

“Baka” Maru replied, pretending to be angry. But the truth is he was relieved to see the small laughter emits from the youngest member even though he knows well the guy was acting.

Kame knew their intention and he was more than grateful for it. Therefore he decided, he would not let his personal issue affected the warm atmosphere they were sharing. The food was great, the music was cheerfully soothing and even Junno puns didn’t sounds that bad. So there is no reason at all to spoil the fun by acting like a brat, even though he was feeling rather down.

***************

Kame was practically dragging his feet through the corridor. Not because he was drunk, well he wished he was but unfortunately Maru will turn into a nag monster if he did. But he was feeling kinda heavy to go back to the empty apartment.

He thought, after months being on his own without Jin constant presence, he got used to it already. Well, the house doesn’t smell of cigarette, the bathroom towel always on its rack and he got the time to practice strumming his guitar again. Unfortunately season greetings were not too kind to lonely soul. ‘Who really decide that you need to celebrate Christmas with your love one?’ he pouted as he slipped the key in.

As he entered his apartment, he secretly wished Jin would show up from behind the curtain trying to surprise him, just like the old days when Jin pretended that he could not make it for a date and then unexpectedly appeared in his living room, waiting with that small smile that he loves so much. Sadly, there was no Jin waiting this time.

Kame sighed as he went straight to his room for a quick bath. A hot bath always works when he’s feeling under the weather. After 20 minute under the streaming hot shower, Kame finally came out wrapped in a brown bathrobe with a small towel on his head.

With his right hand still drying his hair, he reached for his phone with placed on the side table. There were few well wishes text messages, but non from the one he was expecting from. ‘He said he’s busy’ Kame tried to reason out. But he could not hold back the sigh.

Then his eyes caught the sight of a small black box under the lampshade. He took it carefully and pursed his lips. ‘I need to wrap this.’

He took the box and a paper bag full of colorful wrapping papers to the living hall. As he settled himself on the floor, sitting up straight facing the small table, Kame was smiling softly as he made mental notes to bring the already wrapped gifts for his group members.

The room was a bit chilly and his bathrobe was not helping either, but he was so engrossed wrapping the small box he couldn’t be bother to switch on the heater. Almost 20 minutes later, the small black box was nicely wrapped in an icy blue wrapping paper with a small ribbon at the corner.

A satisfied smile formed on his thin lips as he walked over to the small Christmas tree at the corner of the room and placed it under it.
Unlike previous years where the tree seems to glow with all bright decorations, this year it was left naked without any of it and there was no other gift under it beside Jin’s newly wrapped present. “Gomene tree-chan, Jin could not make it this year” Kame mumbled to the lonely tree and felt his own loneliness eating him up.

He walked away from the tree and pick up his house phone dialing a number. “Oka-san, sorry for calling this late” Kame spoke softly to the receiver as his hand twirled around his robe edges. “Oh, nothing. Just to let you know I’ll be joining everyone for dinner” he explained calmly before adding “Oh, the other show was canceled” he lied.

After few more minutes on the phone, Kame finally wished his mother goodnight and promised to be home by 5pm. He retreated to his bedroom right after he placed all the gifts for his family in a box for tomorrow.

As he lie on the bed, he turned to the empty side of the huge bed and whispered “Merry Christmas, Jin”

“Oka-san, I could not finish all this” Kame whined as his mother placed a huge container with all the leftover inside his car.

“Ask your friends to help out” her mother replied as she rearranged the food carefully.

Kame wanted to protest, but seeing how determined his mother was, he decided to let it be. He went inside and bid his goodbye to the rest and explained once more why he could not stay overnight.

Before he drive away, his mother kissed his cheek and added “Take care of yourself, and don’t think too much. ”Kame was puzzled by her goodbye message. But then again, everyone knows never to underestimate a mother’s intuition.

It was already late and the road was almost empty as Christmas nearing its end. Then suddenly his message tone filled the car. Kame slowed his car as he tried to reach for the phone and read it aloud.

To: Kame-chan
Are you still at your parent’s or heading back? Can we meet at Mori Garden, Roppongi Hill?
From: Maru

Kame was surprised by the sudden request. But since he’s not that far from the mentioned spot and he does need to distribute the leftover; Kame replied.

To: Maru
See you in half an hour.
From: Kame-chan

***************

Roppongi streets were beautifully decorated for Christmas. All the trees along the streets were illuminated with lights that changes color every half a minute. There was no snow, but it was still a white Christmas in Roppongi.

As Kame headed to Mori Garden, he passed TV Asahi and took right turn to Mori tower before parked his car at Mori Garden. The car park was almost empty as expected since it was almost 12.30am. He carefully took some of the food out and quickly made his way to the garden entrance and headed to the small lake which was the main attraction of the garden.

But after few minutes walking, he was halted in his track. The garden was so beautiful, he felt overwhelmed by the sparkling decoration. An amazing glass tree was placed in the middle of the pond. It was lighted and the color changes after few seconds. The sparkling tree looked like a giant floating chandelier, glowing brilliantly from inside. And the clear reflection from the lake makes it much more magical. Kame was gapping at the sight and felt himself walked in a trance admiring the illumination.

“It’s magical isn’t it” a soft voice startled the younger guy and jolted him back to reality.

“Shit, don’t do that” Kame took a step back in shock, trying to balance himself.

Jin managed to grab his wrist, assisting him on his feet “Gomene” he added in a beautiful smile. “Come, I save us a seat.”

“Why are you here? I’m supposed to meet up with Maru” Kame was puzzled by the surprise appearance of the guy he was thinking about the whole day.

Jin pretended to pout “Are you dating Maru now?”

Kame was about to reply when Jin grabbed his wrist again. “Gomene. I asked Maru to send the message. I want to surprise you.”

Kame was dumbfounded but definitely happy, making mental notes to thank Maru later as he let Jin dragged him by the wrist. Then they stopped under a beautiful slightly hidden lighted tree. There was a checkered cloth spread under it with a small picnic basket.

Jin settled on the sheet and signaled Kame to do the same. Kame carefully sat next to Jin as the other revealed what’s inside the basket. “Sorry, this is all I got. I got some work at TV Asashi and they gave me the wine before we parted” Jin said sheepishly as he held a bottle of red wine. “I wanted to see you so badly and thought of going to your apartment. But then I heard one of the staff mentioned about the floating Christmas tree. So I thought of this.”

Kame tried to hide his blissful smile but for once he doesn’t felt so bad that he failed to do so. “That will do. Coz I happened to have some Christmas food here” Kame placed the food container in the middle of the spread sheet. “Oka-san packed this for me.”

Jin shook his head “How could she know?”

“Mothers. You know how they are” Kame chuckled to himself.

Jin pulled Kame closer and gave a peck on his cheek “I know Christmas just ended, but Merry Christmas Kazu.” As Kame settled closer to the older guy, Jin added “Sorry I didn’t get you anything for Christmas.”

Kame shook his head softly as he leaned closer and returned the kiss “It’s okay. Because all I want for Christmas, is you.”
