Chapter 31. Home Sweet Home?

Baby, this is really goodbye.
The curtain’s ‘bout to fall and I’m about to walk out your life.

Asuka rubbed the sleep out of her eyes as she woke to the sound of the apartment stereo being turned on. That only meant one thing, Lexi was up and she was going to burst into Asuka’s room any minute now.

Hate me, if you like.
Girl I’m tired of being burned, sorry ain’t gonna cut it this time

Pushing her covers off her, she let her feet find the floor, half her body still resting on her bed. She glanced over at her clock. Rubbing her eyes again, she tried to make out the numbers on it, 8:30am. She had half an hour to get ready and be on campus. It was way too early, well for Asuka at least.

It had been a month since Asuka was back in Auckland. On her first day back she nearly missed her meeting with Tina due to the time differences between Seoul and Auckland. Tina had told her that her credits this semester were not enough for her to complete and graduate her course. She gave her two options: either repeat the course next year or take the extra-curricular project. Asuka chose the latter which meant she had two months to redo her portfolio to the certain criteria for the project.

Since then, Asuka had been going into the campus workshop every day for the past month to get the portfolio done. Usually she would have weekends off but she couldn’t risk it and decided that Sundays were good enough rest days. She really needed to complete this if she wanted to graduate this year, and there were other reasons that she wouldn’t admit to.

And did you wanna stay there; you can lead your heart astray,
And if you close your eyes, I’ll go away

After her morning routines, Asuka picked up her bag and walked out of her room. She found Lexi walking around in the kitchen, taking out food items and crockery, placing them on the kitchen island. She walked up to the island and pulled out the white barstool and dumping her backpack on the stool beside her.

Baby I can tell you right now, since the damage is done
Don’t bother picking up the pieces, rather you’d fade away.

Asuka was trying to tune out the radio as she focused on her roommate busying herself in the kitchen. Lexi was never the one to cook, it had always been Asuka that had whipped up their meals so Asuka found this as odd to watch her roommate place various items in a frying pan and stand in front of a stove.

How could she be so cruel to me, yet she could be so cool about it?
Guess the rest is history.
Hey I’ll catch you soon but I doubt it, I doubt it, I doubt it
Don’t wanna hear another word about it, about it, yeah.

The song lyrics were starting to get to Asuka, that’s one thing she hated about music. She couldn’t help but notice the lyrics in a certain song; it was one of the things that drew her to a certain song. She usually only liked a song because of their lyrics, and of course the melody and beats because what’s a bunch of words with no backing track mean? She stood up and walked over to the stereo, she pressed the off button and took her seat back on the bar stool.

“Hey! I was listening to that!” her roommate turned around glaring at the older girl. Asuka just shrugged and flipped through the magazine left on the bench top. “Uhh, hello? Are you gonna switch it back on?”

Asuka looked up from her magazine and stifled a laugh at the image of her roommate, a spatula in one hand as her hands were on her hips. How much could’ve changed that week she had gone?

“No.”

“Why, I thought you liked that song?” Lexi sounded annoyed.

“Not when the lyrics seem to be doing a play by play of what has happened in my life recently,” Asuka’s reply caught her roommate off guard. “Sorry.”

Lexi didn’t reply, instead she turned her attention back to whatever she was cooking on the stove. Asuka watched her roommate as she cooked breakfast and an aroma that smelled awfully like pancakes, slowly filled the three-bedroom apartment.

When Lexi picked Asuka up from the airport she made the older female tell her everything that had happened in Seoul. Being the person Asuka was, she just gave her a simple run down on what had happened, but Lexi wanted to know everything, and that meant details. All the gory and racy details no matter how reluctant Asuka was to share them with her roomie. Lexi always had a way of getting stuff out of her.

She could trust Lexi with a lot of things and vice versa. You could say they were best friends, in a way, but Asuka didn’t have many close friends so she would just have to take what she could get.

There was Ana who was in her illustrating class and Yuki who was in the same Dance 101 class as her. All four of them found to be in each other’s Korean class and had been close friends ever since they found out they were all into Korean music, specifically 2PM. Asuka didn’t reveal to them that Nichkhun was her best friend until he came back to Auckland for her 20th birthday, and yes, it truly was chaotic.

“Here,” Lexi placed a plate of pancakes in front of Asuka, “Pancakes à la Lexi.” Asuka looked up at her roommate and tilted her head to the side, poking the contents on her plate with her fork.

“Since when did you cook…pancakes?” she said in a mocking tone but her sad expression said different.

“What’s wrong with that? You do it all the time so I thought I’d give it ago. Besides, when you weren’t here I needed to find some way to feed myself, and I really can’t afford take-out every night, Suke,” Lexi said as she placed the pan in the sink and took her pink and white apron off. Although the both of them were never too fond of pink, that was the only one left on the shelves when they purchased it.

The older female took a seat beside Asuka, putting her backpack on the floor, and began to eat when she noticed the dull expression on her roommate’s face. She turned her gaze to Asuka’s plate and found that she was still poking at the pancakes.

“You afraid that it’s poisoned or something? I’ve known you for two years and you still don’t trust me?” Lexi teased.

“It’s…not that, Lex,” her tone was sad.

“Then what? And don’t say nothing, you hate that as much as I do.”

“After the confession, that morning I had gone all out with a European breakfast - French Toast, pancakes, the works. It was a thank you and an apology of what I had said to…him and this,” she motioned to the plate in front of her, “just brought back that day, you know.”

Throughout Asuka’s explanation Lexi didn’t comment. She knew how much her roommate missed Taecyeon, and the rest of the boys, but she would never admit it to herself. Asuka was too proud in her own weird way to admit that she missed, or even liked someone. She was always the one who would never act on her feelings, whether the guy reciprocated her feelings or not. Asuka needed someone to push her to do so.

“I better get to school,” Asuka grabbed her bag off the floor and slung it over her shoulder. “I’ll be home for dinner. Do you want me to pick something up since it’s take-out Wednesdays, or are you cooking?” She was back to her cynical self once again.

“I feel like Chinese if you don’t mind.”

“Chinese it is then.”

“Hey, aren’t you gonna eat?”

“Oh, right.” Asuka rolled the two pancakes and shoved it down her mouth. Lexi winced at how her roommate could do that. No wonder she gets along with 2PM so well, and I’m thinking especially Chansung. “Well, see ya.”

“Yep, later. Oh, and tell Ana and Yuki about Friday okay.” She heard Asuka mumble a “yeah” and she was out the door. Lexi sighed and leaned back in her chair. The days were so quiet now that Asuka was at school. Lexi had just finished her semester and was looking to spend some time with Asuka and the gang, but she was now busy that Lexi found herself doing nothing at home.

The campus was unusually quiet for a Wednesday. Maybe it was because most of the students had finished with the semester or that Asuka picked the time to have lunch when everyone else was still in class. She sat on the green grass underneath a big tree, it was her favourite spot on campus and it was her undesignated meeting area where she and her friends would meet up.

She spotted someone familiar walking pass and called out to her. “Ana!” She motioned to join her at their favourite spot.

“Asuka, shouldn’t you be working your ass off in the workshop?” Ana walked over and sat herself down by Asuka.

“Everyone needs a break, Ana. I don’t have the focus like you do,” she teased “Oh before I forget, you free Friday night? Lexi decided we need a little gathering, we haven’t had one in a while.”

“Yeah, I’m free. Just say when and where.” Ana took a piece Asuka’s cake. “Mmm, Wednesday’s Triple Choc Cake is the best~” she hummed, licking the rest of the chocolate icing off her fingers.

“You can have the rest,” Asuka pushed the cake towards her friend. “Our apartment, seven. And can you bring those fudge brownies Yuki makes. I feel like indulging ourselves on Friday.”

“Sure, who else is coming besides me and Yuki?”

“Come on Yuki-chan, just one date. Please~”

The two females looked up to see Yuki being hounded by a taller Asian male who had recently died his hair a bright orange colour.

“Oh look at the time, Ricky, I’m gonna be late for class. See ya.” Yuki couldn’t be fast enough as she ran into the campus, Ricky left behind.

“Poor Ricky. Yuki should just give the guy an answer and put him out of his misery. He’s not coming right?” Ana asked.

Ricky had been after Yuki ever since they met each other on orientation day. They had a few of the same classes together but Yuki chose to sit as far away from him as she could possibly sit. Unfortunately Ricky didn’t get the message and had been pining after Yuki for the two years they had been in university.

“No, no. That would just be plain mean, not that Yuki isn’t already doing a good job at it.” The two females laughed and spent the rest of their break just talking about, anything really.

Ana helped her out with the graphical aspects of her portfolio as she really didn’t have a knack at, well drawing. Ana had a natural talent, whether it was drawings by hand or by computer, she had always made the best illustrations and helped Asuka a lot in class. That’s how they became friends really. Asuka had noticed how good Ana was at drawing and had asked her if she could help with her illustrations. Luckily Ana said yes and now they friends just as long as they were with Lexi.

As soon as Asuka got home, she dumped her bag on the sofa and placed the night’s dinner on the kitchen bench top. Lexi was on her laptop, seated on the barstool, pushing up her glasses every now and then. Her fringe would fall in front of her eyes every so often and she would blow it to the side. Asuka shook her head as she had told the older female time and time again to either pin her fringe back or change her hairstyle, the latter wouldn’t listen.

“So can they come?” Lexi asked, not looking up from her laptop.

“Yep, and I told Ana to tell Yuki to make those delicious fudge brownies. I think we all deserve a little indulgence don’t ya think?” Asuka replied, pulling out two bowls and two pair of chopsticks. She opened the bag and took out two takeaway boxes and opened them. “Me and Ana also saw Ricky bugging Yuki again for that date. Hah, I never get sick of those two. What’ll think will happen if Yuki were to say yes?”

Lexi was quiet and Asuka found it odd for her roommate not to answer her. She was the one who usually didn’t answer, not the other way round.

“Lexi, are you even listening?” she turned to see her roommate staring at her laptop, her eyes widened and her mouth no longer holding the chocolate stick it had been holding. “Lex, what’s wrong?”

Asuka made her way to the other side of the bench top, her roommate still frozen as her gaze was fixated on the screen. She followed Lexi’s gaze and her heart stopped.

“Don’t look, Suka!” But Lexi’s warning was too late as the older female had come in closer and read what was on the screen:

Taecyeon and Jessica a couple?
October 27, 2010

With the recent confirmation of SHINee’s Jonghyun and actress Shin Se Kyung dating, a post that was written on an online community board by a netizen has been receiving a lot of attention…
…What’s interesting is that the post’s main point was about the netizen always seeing 2PM’sTaecyeon and SNSD’s Jessica together watching movies, and later on adds that he/she smells something fishy between Jonghyun and Shin Se Kyung as well…

Asuka felt like her heart had just been ripped out and stomped on, only to be put back and ripped out again. She crushed the piece of polystyrene in her hand, crumbling it to pieces. Her fist was tightly clenched, she wanted to look away from the screen but she couldn’t stop reading the article.

“It’s probably nothing, Suke. You know how netizen’s are, always making up things,” Lexi tried to reason out, although she didn’t entirely believe the word herself.

Before Lexi could say anymore the phone rang, startling both of the females. They let it ring a few more times before Lexi reached over to pick it up.

“Don’t!” Asuka’s voice stopped Lexi. “Let it go to voicemail.” Lexi listened, knowing who could have picked this exact moment to call.

*Beep* Pick up, it’s me, Taec. It’s not true, Suka. I’m not dating her…
