How Can I Already Be In Crisis Mode?

WHEN I HAD A SNOW DAY TODAY. Guys, my first day of student teaching? Aborted a la snow day! For ONE INCH OF SNOW AND A SLIGHT COAT OF ICE.

I CANNOT.

To make up for this bit of ridiculousness, I decided the day needed a fantastic end. I dropped my iPod touch and cracked the screen in the upper left corner:

Sometimes I wonder if anyone ever enjoys teaching (besides my father). Every single education major I know has similar complaints to yours and just...I don't get the appeal (although my hat's off to you for even attempting it -- I'd freak out over something much less than this, most likely).

The relentless optimist in me says that things are bound to look up from here and just to give it some time, but the realist in me points out that pretty much everyone experiences a significant change in plans in college. Tell your adviser about this, maybe, and see what they have to say. In the mean time, as a thought question, can you remember what ultimately inspired you to try the education track? That might help with the decision making...

I wish I could. I've wanted to since I was four (and was probably subtly influenced by the notion that GIRLS TEACH, and maybe the idea that my grandfather was a professor at MIT for 30 something years of his life). But I cannot recall why I stuck with it. I don't remember a single definitive point going yes, this, I want to do this. THIS IS AWESOME. LOOK AT THIS AWESOME. Or anything like that. The best I can say is I like being with kids (so why I'm doing secondary education is beyond me) and I like working with them (which everyone says should be enough. IT ISN'T).

Yeah, I hear you on the whole GIRLS TEACH thing -- now that I think of it, the overwhelming majority of teachers I've ever had (up to and including college) were female. Go figure.

Anyway, if you like being with/working with kids, maybe consider working as some sort of tutor as a side project to whatever you wind up doing? That puts things a bit more into your control and you can still do something you like without...*gestures expansively* this.

If you're dreading teaching so much, it's certainly not the career for you. Schedule a meeting with a guidance counselor and see what else is out there, especially fields where some of your coursework can transfer. No one needs to work at something that makes them miserable and sick.

I have to say, even though it's scary, even though it's something you've prepared for and looking forward to your entire life, if your career path is not something that makes you happy, change it. That how I felt with Nursing until I switched to Lit and I'm so much more happier for it.
