Title:  No Way Out

Disclaimer:  Not mine.

A/N:  Another one for hawaii_5_0_100 .  The prompt this week was “escape.”  This one is almost a prequel to the others in the series.  Much thanks to moogsthewriter  for helping me with the ending, even when I know she was quite busy :)

Summary:  Kono’s done this before, but somehow it doesn’t feel like it.

“Watch their escape,” Danny says.  He’s leaning low, back pressed against the wall.  He’s holding his gun, breathing in forced, even exhales.

Kono adjusts her own grip on her gun, blinking at him.  “What?”

Danny nods, one hand fluttering away from his gun.  “Their escape,” he whispers.  “When Steve and Chin flush them out, they’re going to come our way.  We need to let them know there’s no way out.”

Kono nods, swallowing.  Her vest feels tight.  She’s done this before, but somehow it doesn’t feel like it.

“Hey,” Danny says.  He’s looking at her, blue eyes steady, smiling.  “We’ve done way worse before.”

It’s meager consolation, but it’s what Kono needs.  She laughs.  “Rookie nerves, I guess.”

Danny makes a face.  “Nah.”

She looks at him, intent.  “You still get nervous?”

Danny snorts.  “With Steve as a partner?” he asks, appropriately incredulous.  “I’m always nervous.”

She chuckles again.  “He does have a certain way about him.”

“A way,” Danny repeats.  “This is the man who got me shot my first day, the man who hung a guy off a building and threw another in a shark tank.”

Kono shrugs.  “You tied a guy to a car.”

“Under extreme duress,” Danny objects.  “Besides, that type of maniacal thinking--it’s contagious.  Like the plague.”

“We always get the bad guys,” Kono offers.

“Yeah, we always get the bad guys,” he concedes.  “Which is why they’ll be so intent on escaping.  One look at Steve Aggressive-Negotiations McGarrett, they’ll be making a beeline our way.”

Kono adjusts her stance against the wall somberly.  “We’ll be ready for them.”

He holds her gaze seriously.  The lines of tension are still there, creasing his forehead, around his eyes.  He wets his lips.  “Definitely.”

There’s a small crackle on the radio, Steve’s voice barely a whisper above the interference.  “Into position.”

Danny’s objections are gone, his focus singular.  He jogs around Kono, moving to flank the door.  He makes eye contact with her, nodding once.

She swallows hard, nodding back.

“Go,” Steve’s voice comes, gunfire not far behind.

Kono’s heart thuds, cheeks flushing.  It’s so much adrenaline; she almost doesn’t know what to do with it.

But Danny does.  He turns, kicking in the door, leading with his gun.  His lead is easy to follow, strong and sure.  Together, they hold their ground.

When the gunfire fades, Kono feels shaky with relief.  Her gun in still in her hands, finger on the trigger, and she turns to Danny with a silly grin.

But there are no smiles or wisecracks.  Danny’s on the floor, sprawled on his side.  His vest is shredded; there’s blood on the floor.

For a second, Kono hesitates.

She blinks, wills it away, but it doesn’t go anywhere because Danny’s right: there’s no way out.  There’s just 5-0 and a job that needs to be done and there’s no one else to do it.  It’s Kono’s turn and she forces her numb feet to move, step by step, to Danny’s side.
