Title: The Big Picture
Disclaimer: Not mine.
A/N: Apparently this is becoming a bit of a drabble series for
hawaii_5_0_100 . This week the word was paint. Maybe I’ll actually get to the actual aftermath next week :) Thanks to
sendintheklowns for a quick beta.

Chin doesn’t take police work for granted. Now that Steve has given him a second chance, he intends on using it for all it’s worth. Not just to bring people to justice, to use any and all measures necessary to get the job done, but to prove to everyone that he can. That he always could. Everyone doubted him back then.
No one will doubt him now.
It paints one hell of a picture. A disgraced cop with something to prove. A man more dedicated to justice than his own needs. Chin sacrifices everything, now. His pride, his time, his friendships, and, if needed, his life. Police work is more than a career to him; it’s redemption, and he’ll fight with all he has to earn it and hold onto it.
And in so many ways, it’s easy. It’s so easy to give everything as long as it works. It’s easy to believe it’s worth it when 5-0 closes cases. It’s easy to look a fellow officer in the eye when he has the high ground. It’s easy to give when they can laugh together in the aftermath of a job well done.
But there’s more to it than that, and it’s not always easy. Maybe in all the years he spent off the force, he forgot that sometimes what he says he’ll give will really come due.
Because this case paints a different picture. Danny’s blood on the floor, the cold unwavering look in Steve’s eyes, and Kono shaking her head and saying she can’t do this now, she just can’t.
None of them can, and Danny paints a picture in blood, of sacrifice and of commitment. Steve adds his presence with shades of black and white, coloring in the gaps with grim determination and plaintive justice. Kono brings in a hint of light, even in the darkest corners, as she offers her prayers at the water, the best color palette she knows.
Together, it’s a masterpiece or a tragedy--Chin’s not sure which. But he adds his own colors with solid lines, working to close the case none of them want to focus on but all want closed. Because Chin can see the big picture--he can see the teamwork and the sacrifice and the family--and he’ll do what he needs to do to make sure it’s a piece they’re all proud of in the end.
