Summary: We both know words still hurt.

Stephen’s scarred and half-crippled. He’s missing a few fingers; the pain lingers. He might quit except for Cutter. They’re two incomplete people, struggling to make a new whole. It doesn’t always work; sometimes it does.
Helen comes back; she says she needs to fix things.
“We’ll stop you,” Nick promises.
“Hardly,” she snaps. “Stephen’s barely able to walk. You’re half the man you were. Two miserable invalids, perfectly paired.”
“Sticks and stones, Helen,” Nick says.
Her eyes glint. “We both know words still hurt.”
“Anyway,” Stephen interjects, lifting his good hand steadily. “Bullets hurt more than all of them combined.”
