I am restricted to 250 of each with my current (free) phone, and find it totally inadequate some months, and other months I have a bunch left over. I am currently down to 3 text messages and 7 minutes of talk time until about the 6th or 7th.
I'm really only considering the unlimited texting because it's cheaper on this one new Verizon "More Everything" plan. If not for that plan, I would have been planning on getting maybe 400 talk minutes and 1000 text messages, at least to start with.
There's another option you've overlooked. Sign up for the prepaid plan with one of my old phones (a pain to text on, but doable) Live with that for a month or two *then* get the Cosmos.
And for the curtains bit, what you want are called "blackout curtains". Originally intended to keep lights inside from being seen outside, they work just fine the other way.
Only problem is how to mount them. That'll probably require some negotiation with REACH.
ETA: there's a policy about not putting things up in windows, but I think that's more about signs and things. Maybe you can get permission to cover the windows with black construction paper or something.

That totally stinks about your phone! I use a prepaid phone, and I find it super easy to deal with. No contract, no fees. When the minutes are running low, I go to any drugstore or grocery store, buy a minutes card, scratch off the silvery film, enter the code, and I'm all set. More minutes. My phone has no Internet, though, because that would cost money, and any time I'm waiting with other people in a public place (like in a waiting room or something), I'm the only person who's not messing around with their phone, iPad, et cetera. I feel a bit self-conscious about that, but I can't complain.
Anyway, I don't remember how much I paid for that phone (it was in 2010, I think), but if you can get past the initial cost of a prepaid phone, it's a nice thing to have. I use T-Mobile, though.
And about your lighting situation - would it help at least somewhat if you wore one of those cheap little eye masks?
I have an eye mask, been using it for years, but it doesn't work very well with my CPAP mask. Can't put it under the mask without breaking the seal, and it isn't terribly effective over the mask.
I have been putting the cover over my head, since the CPAP gives me an air supply, but I still feel like I'm suffocating after a few minutes. Pretty sure it's psychosomatic, but still.
