It was curious to read about the effects of drunkenness on you both: first you being unaware of the intended mugging, then her forgetting the rest of the trip. But, the ~two of you made it through safely :)
It was definitely a good lesson. In subsequent travels abroad, I never allowed myself to get drunk after. A glass of wine or a beer was okay. Otherwise, no go. Especially not alone.
I like both parts of the story -- the adventure in Mexico, but also sticking up for the girl who didn't go hiking. You must have had quite a time in Mexico! You were lucky to have a friend along to watch your back -- literally! It all turned out for the best, and it sounds like you had a great time. I really enjoyed reading this.
Reminds me of our high school trip to Spain. We had "that one girl" in our group who spent more days un-sober than not. The rest of us had to take turns watching out for her in a foreign country. Ack!
I'm glad that you and your friend made it back safely from your adventure in Mexico. Funny that she was alert enough to protect your backpack, but too drunk to remember anything that happened afterward.
It sounds as if she learned something from that, though. If you drink enough to blot out your memory, that's definitely too much.
I once had a black out once years later, when someone spiked my drink with everclear, and I was horrified after it happened. After that, I was very careful to always monitor any drinks. It came in handy when someone tried to poison me in Rome.
