Shoes for San Francisco?

May 13, 2013 02:01

Hi, all! It's been a long while since I last posted!

This summer, I've got an internship in San Francisco, and for the life of me, I can't find a decent pair of shoes to wear.

My main issue is that I'm over 6' tall, wear a size 28/30, and need women's size 12 shoes; in short, they've got to be crazy-supportive, but they also have to come in a ( Read more... )

I find Keen shoes to be incredibly comfortable and great for walking around, in the city and even for hiking and they have several styles that go up to 12.

I'm not sure if they'd work for you since they're clogs but I also LOVE my Troentorp Picasso clogs--I'm 5'10, 375lbs and the wooden soles are so amazingly supportive, and since they're unisex, they go up past your size. I find them much less treacherous than Danskos because the Troentorp soles aren't a slight wedge that narrows at the bottom of the sole, like Danskos. also, these shoes wear like iron--been wearing them daily for over a year and they're hardly scratched.

Thanks for your comment! I was considering Keens yesterday, so it's good to know I'm on the right track there!

And, I'll definitely check out the Troentorps! I actually love clogs, but haven't been able to find a pair that fit me just right. I used to wear Danskos back when I started teaching, but had to give them up when I moved to a hillier area--it was just too risky. That's when I picked up a pair of Birkenstocks, which I also loved, but aesthetically, their closed-back shoes aren't my thing, and I could never find a pair of their clogs that stayed on my foot while walking upstairs or at an incline.

But, the Troentorps look promising! Did you get the original sole (all wood) or the ideal sole? (See "Choosing Sole" on the page you linked to.)

I got the ideal soles and I'd recommend them over the originals--it's a good mix of support, shock absorption and traction. Also, there's two options for the last, high and regular--if you have wide feet, def. get the high last.
fwiw, I ive in Seattle, so I'm going up and down hills all the time. :P

yay, Troentorps!!!

Not the OP, but those look really cool! I have an old pair of Danskos with a wide-based sole which are great, but every newer style I've tried is just not the same. Thanks for the idea!

I'm rather fond of New Balance shoes, and their casual/dressy shoe line, Aravon. I know they go up to size 12, and they tend to be dressier than Keen/Dansko type shoes.

Thanks for mentioning Aravon!

I never realized they went up to a size 13--and, they have a few mary janes that look promising!

Aravon! I have ridiculously high arches, and they are very, very supportive. They also have great traction, and they're LIGHT! Almost like not having a shoe on at all.

3rding aravon. i find their sandals run a bit large-- some I ordered in 12, i could have done with an 11 i think. I just picked up the aravon kendall (in metallic bronze!) and I'm loving it. check joes new balance outlet for steals on last year's stuff.

It sounds like our bodies are fairly similar (I'm 5'11, 320, size 24ish) and I wear these as my everyday jeans-and-comfort shoes: http://www.clarksusa.com/eng/product/wave_run/26086505

Sorry for the late reply--LiveJournal's been doing maintenance, so I haven't been able to access my account.

Thanks so much for the recommendation! I ended up ordering another shoe from the WaveWalk line, the Wave.Cruise, and they're really comfy! They're a bit low on arch support, but they have a removable insole, so it should be fine once I stick another one in. The sole is great, though, and the whole thing's really light!

I think I've got a winner.
