Coats and warm pants

Nov 06, 2010 14:12

So it's starting to get cold around here and I have yet to get a good coat for the winter. (Yes I have last year's, but I happen to be larger this year, plus it could use a replacement anyway.) Right now, I'm looking at this parka by Lands' End, but before buying, I was wondering if any of you have used this coat and could comment on how warm it is ( Read more... )

advice, coats, recommendations and suggestions, land's end

I don't know about that specific coat, but I have had many Lands' End coats and all have been great. Currently, this is my "OMG it is freaking cold outside" coat:

Thanks, I've heard plenty of good things about Lands' End. I kinda like that coat too. :)

Hello! I would like to take a moment to direct you to the community profile, most specifically the following:

3a. Having said the above, it is also worth nothing that not everyone here is a lady, and thus saying "hey ladies!" or some variation thereof can make some members feel left out. We're a diverse community and not everyone here - even the people you personally might identify as a lady - identifies with that term, and it can be alienating for some people. "Hey y'all!" "Hey fatshionistas!" "Greetings!" and "Hi Everyone" are all great inclusive alternative greetings. A post won't be rejected from the queue for this, but a mod will comment to give a heads up to OPs who use ladycentric language, even when it's an honest oversight.

Although the above is in reference to greetings, your phrasing "What do you ladies like to do to keep your legs warm during the winter?" may also be alienatating for some people. Please consider changing it.

Just a gentle suggestion. Thanks for posting.

Sorry about that, I tried, but I think I'm too used to hanging out in the wow_ladies comm. :) I'll go ahead and change it, thanks for the reminder.

I'm just curious - I've seen multiple posts where the poster opens up with "Hey guys!" and they don't get asked to change it. Mods only seem to mind when it's "Hey ladies" or "Hey girls" or something. I don't identify as a guy. Why the double standard?

I have that coat (in Brown), and I'm an 18/20 on top (big belly and huge arms) and it fits wonderfully and is very warm.

Actually, all of my coats (except for 1 or 2) are from Lands End.

That's really good to hear. Thanks for commenting. :) Did the 2x fit just fine, or would you suggest going up a size?

Actually, I have the "Regular" XL which is an 18/20, and it fit just fine. But I guess if you wear super bulky sweaters and layers, you may want to go with a Womens 2x.

I usually will rock knee or thigh socks if it's super cold. I've had decent luck with the ones from Torrid and www.sockdreams.com

Lands' End's coats are amazingly warm and comfy, in my experience. I have this coat, and while it's not the best for INSANELY cold days, it does the job most of the winter. :)

Oo, I love knee highs, but I've been having bad luck finding ones that fit lately. I'll definitely check those sources out. :D

Those quilted coats aren't my style, but then again, it's been more than fifteen years since I wore anything other than a greatcoat or peacoat (every time I need a new jacket I change my mind about which I prefer).

I live in new england, and oh my goodness, I cannot wear pants of any sort in the winter here without long underwear underneath them. I got a bunch of longjohns for cheap from the army/navy surplus outlet, but those are kind of bulky, so I can only wear them under pants that are fairly loose. I've also got a couple of pairs of pricier hi-tech fabric long johns from an outdoors store that are much thinner and can fit under tighter pants. In both cases I bought men's sizes because, like you, I carry most of my weight in my belly, and the women's stuff was just. . .not cut to accommodate a tummy.

Hmm, I forgot about the idea of long underwear. I might have to look into finding some good cheap ones somewhere.
