A mini freakout

I'm sure many of you are probably tired of hearing of the Kevin Smith/Southwest saga, but the whole drama has me seriously freaked out. I'm flying in April and May (American and Delta respectively) and while I never gave one single thought about fitting into the airplane seats while booking, I now can't get it off my mind. The most prominent ( Read more... )

One - you're gorgeous!
Two - I'm bigger than you and haven't had a problem. My husband's bigger than me (and bigger than Kevin Smith) and hasn't had a problem either.
Three - If one of the the requirements for not being deemed too fat to fly is being able to sit comfortably in an airline seat, no one over the size of my ten year old niece should be allowed to fly. And even my ten year old niece, who is tall for her age, could use more leg room.

Isn't that the truth!!!

Seriously! My brother is bordering on underweight (yes, there is some wild genetic variation in our family!) but he's 6'1" with very long legs. He usually ends up with bruises.

I'm flying on Thursday and I'm nervous. I carry a lot of weight in my butt and thighs, and I have trouble putting the armrests down. I can put them down if necessary, but they dig into my thighs and it doesn't feel good. I guess I'm one of the fatties who should buy another seat, but dammit, I can't afford to do that and even if I could, I don't think I should have to when folks with really wide shoulders or long legs don't have to.

I *just* flew both american and delta, and while american wasn't comfortable, I did fit. Delta was a little roomier. I'm a size 22 on bottom, 50 inch hips and a 38 inch waist. I didn't have any problems with the airline personnel.

I've flown US Air, United and Lufthansa fairly regularly without a problem. I did have to have a belt extender on ONE of my flights a few years ago when I was a 24/26 bottom but it was never an issue. I'm now a size 20 and fit very comfortably with no extender, even on the small express commuter jets.

I've flown Southwest probably about 50 times, mostly with my son and/or partner. I used to fly Oakland/Ontario,Calif every month for a couple years. I need an extender on some of the flights and I've still never had anyone mention to me anything about buying a second seat. I once had a flight attendent (male) ask me if I could put my arm rests down, it was prbably the same jerk who made that comment to Kevin Smith (I listened to the podcast). My family also flies to Puerto Vallarta every year and I have used Mexicana and a couple other smaller airlines and again, the same thing. I usually need a seatbelt extender, I am 5' 8" 350ish. I have no problem fitting in seats or putting arm rests down, I just have a belly ( ... )
