A mini freakout

Feb 15, 2010 19:33

I'm sure many of you are probably tired of hearing of the Kevin Smith/Southwest saga, but the whole drama has me seriously freaked out. I'm flying in April and May (American and Delta respectively) and while I never gave one single thought about fitting into the airplane seats while booking, I now can't get it off my mind. The most prominent ( Read more... )

I can understand your anxiety. I have been so torn up about this whole escapade because I have flown Southwest more than a half dozen times over the last year. I have never had a problem, but now that I have two flights purchased in March and April, I'm afraid there will be higher sensitivity and people will be kicked from flights more actively. I've never had any issues sitting in the seats, or buckling the seat belt. But neither does Kevin Smith.

Needless to say I'm a little concerned, and I wish I had more to easy your concerns.

And that dress from Valentine's Day is AMAZING.

I do think you will be fine, I'm about an 18-20 and 5'4", if that tells you anything.

I've flown several different airlines over the past few years at 240 pounds+ and I have never had an issue. I'm 5'10" and I carry most of my weight in the boobs/belly area. Judging from your picture I don't think you'll have an issue, but I guess it depends on how the airlines handle this Kevin Smith fiasco.

This is almost my exact experience.
I flew American this past August and was approx. 260 lbs. I am 5'10" and carry most of my weight in belly and boobs. I was able to sit somewhat comfortably (you know, as far as airplanes go) in my seat without issue and without a seatbelt extender.
I do wonder though if I was sitting next to strangers, my experience would be different?

I wonder about this, too. I always fly with my thin-ish husband and I always take the window seat.

I fly 10-12 times a year, including US domestic, trans-Atlantic and intra-Europe, so I'm on a variety of planes and airlines. I'm 4'11", 200 +/- 10 lbs, a size 20-22 on bottom and I carry most of my weight in my belly in front. I fit width wise in every airplane seat with room to spare (no issues lowering armrest ever and usually have 4-6 inches to spare on the seatbelt since it sits lower on my hips than where most of my fat is. One issue--I can barely put down the tray, and it's definitely not an option if the person in front of me reclines their seat even a little.

Pick an aisle seat for yourself and maybe have your boyfriend in the middle seat and you'll be fine. From your pictures and our similar size, I don't think you to worry about the flight and seats, instead you can look forward to your cruise.

Lovely photo!

I have a trip planned at the end of April/beginning of May and I'm considerably bigger. This has left me a bit worried; however, I will be happy to pay for a second seat if it's required and there is space. When I booked the tickets, I made sure my husband and I are sitting next to one another and that there are only two seats on that side of the aisle. This was one reason why I specifically wanted a specific flight.

I think you will be fine and I hope you have a fabulous time on your trip.

I suspect the situation with Kevin Smith may raise awareness of the need for some changes in how airlines handle these situations. At least we can hope so.

except your husband isnt allowed to share his seat with you! its agaist their stupid policies.
I have to use a seat belt extender, and am close to 280 in weight. no one has ever made me pay for a extra seat, but I think i am just lucky

right, except her husband likely won't complain if a little bit o'chub touches him.

Nope, he doesn't mind. He bitches that he shouldn't have to pay full fare since he doesn't take up a full seat. His weight is in his belly and he's rather narrow through the hips. I've got wide hips and even if I were 100-150 pounds lighter, I still would 'leak' into the seat next to me.
