Very, very short story time.

May 30, 2009 23:19

Today I was walking downtown with my mom, who falls into the death fattie category. Suddenly a girl about my age, who was also pretty big, starts walking along side us. She yelled "You keep walking ladies! We're proud to be big!" and walks off. At the time I was in a horrible mood and ignored her, but now that I think back on it it makes me smile ( Read more... )

For some reason, I keep picturing Richard Simmons instead of a random lady, and that is hilarious, if terribly wrong.

Maybe I'm out of step, but I'd be appalled.

If you don't know me, don't assume that I'm interested in what you think of my body or what I'm doing with it. Don't assume that you have some right to give me input. It's insulting.

Really, if you wouldn't say it to a big, angry-looking guy with an angry looking pit-bull, don't say it to me. Even if you think I look approachable because of my size, shape, or demographics, that doesn't mean that I want to be approached by a total stranger. Accord me the same respect you'd give to someone you think could hurt you.

I don't think there was anything offensive about it. She didn't say it in any sort of condescending tone, and I think even if someone like you might be personally offended (and obviously you're allowed to have your opinion, I'm not trying to attack you or anything) she meant well. I feel like it wasn't much different than if she had come up to me and told me I was pretty. That's making a comment what you think of someone's body, and no one gets offended by that.

What makes you think it's okay to comment on some strange woman's face or body, positive or negative?

Note that men don't get this same kind of input from strangers.

I don't see anything wrong with someone giving you positive feedback about the way you look. Regardless of whether or not you know the person or asked for it. There's a very big difference between someone coming up to you and saying "Hey, you're beautiful," than someone coming up to you and saying "Hey, go lose 20 pounds." And I can honestly say I've never heard of someone being offended by a well meaning compliment. I personally like hearing that someone thinks I look good, I put a good amount of effort into my appearance.

And yeah, things are different with guys. Men don't tend to compliment other men, but I have heard women complimenting men. I couldn't tell you why men are the way they are.

I was at a bar a couple weeks ago, and I complimented this girls dress, and about ten minute later I overheard her tell my boyfriend that I was beautiful and that he should dance with me. It made me smile.
