I know the commercial you're talking about, and it always left me with a faint sense of distaste. Ugh.

Personally I think that any medical procedures shouldn't be advertized on television. It's not a simple decision and it shouldn't be marketed like a bag of chips or a soap. Having said that it sounds like the commercial was using stupid stereotypes. You know that the average size of a French woman is a 44 (US12/14 I think). It's just silly to think that all French women are stick thin and will point at you when you walk down the streets. You can be laughed at everywhere wether it's because you are fat, thin, have green hair,... whatever. People are stupid EVERYWHERE. lol

There is actually a very active Fat Acceptance organisation called Allegro Fortissimo in France that has been going since the late 1980s.

I have antenna American television. Mostly it spouts at me to do some sort of exercise routine late at night, or to go to a trade school during the day.

I regard them as what they are: ADVERTISEMENTS

I'm not entirely sure why people think you were making some kind of implication about America being bad here. I read your post 3 times and the most inflammatory thing I saw was the title of the post.

I mean...people may not want to realize it, but if someone in a country other than America immediately thinks "must be an American channel" then maybe American television really does have some kind of tone or flavor that is recognizable to non-Americans. I saw nothing here that was "OMG, UHMERICA SUCKS" or anything.

Anyway. I don't really have anything to compare it to, but when I watch Japanese channels online, probably 50% of it is commercials or specials about losing weight, so yeah. TV just sucks in general for everyone when it comes to weight and body issues.

And yeah, if the woman was of a size that would physically fit in an airplane seat, and not like the 1000lb woman or something, then I'd be offended by the ad too.

(sorry for the edit)

American TV tends to have a lot of violence and little sex/nudity. And, you know, people talking with American accents which are discernibly different from British accents...

Yes, that's what I was getting at.

Nitpick: there's no such thing as a 'British accent': hell, 'English accent' is pushing it a lot. (There's probably no such thing as an Amerian accent either, but I'd not know.)
