I think what frustrates me more about this isn't necessarily the derogatory statements (obviously that pisses me off and makes me feel pretty low), but the fact that the majority of my friends think I'm full of it every time I mention how I feel about being fat - how it hurts to -know- the sorts of thoughts people are having about me when I walk down the street. They chalk it up to my "low self-esteem" and try to placate me with stupid comments like "it doesn't matter what you look like, it's your personality that makes you beautiful" and "men will have sex with anyone that's willing", and continual bullshit. It's hard enough to live with feeling like this without having people tell you it's all in your head ( ... )

"men will have sex with anyone that's willing"

Wow, thanks for the pep talk, friends! You sure are awesome friends!

Seriously, I don't want to badmouth your buddies but that's not exactly ego-boosting material.

No fucking kidding! Your friends, who may be wonderful in other respects, seem to know how to act like jackasses.

Yeah, that's pretty brutal. I would have to make a real-life friends-list cut if my pals acted that way.

I've seen these. I also tried to find fat-friendly groups on facebook. I found some groups that were "Fat Kids Rock" or something, but then I was only grossly disappointed in those as well. They only reinforced stereotypes and weren't fat-empowered AT ALL. I thought about making a facebook group, but 1) I don't have the time for it and 2) I didn't know if it would reach anyone/cause people to become more enlightened. I'd be interested to see how your group goes. Good for you :)

Reporting racist/sexist/offensive facebook groups is my hobby. There is a really misogynistic one that I keep reporting that they won't take down, it's like my white whale.

I think it's really telling how this dude is so petrified of having to lay eyes on a woman who doesn't fit his particular standards of beauty. It's like his fragile little world will fall apart if he realized that there are some girls who don't give a shit what he thinks about their appearance.

I think I might start doing that, as there are a TON of sizeist and sexist groups on Facebook. I'll just be interested to see if they do anything about this one.

You have hit the nail on the fucking HEAD. Too bad psychoanalyzing him won't make him go away... but still, good job deconstructing assholes! I think sometimes it's our best defense.

Thanks! Grad school has me deconstructing everything.

I joined, I totally agree and would bring it to the attention of the maintainers. If nothing comes of it, at least you didn't sit idly by.

::puts on Dr. Huang hat*::

Whoever this person is, he (I'm using "he" here universally, not creating a gender bias) is either writing all this stuff (1) because it's anonymous and he gets off on being an asshole online -- in other words, for attention; (2) or because he's actually got some deep-seated hatred (or, more likely, abject fear) of fat women dating back to his childhood, which probably wasn't that long ago. I'm guessing both.

In fact, kansasranger nailed it on the head: "It's like his fragile little world will fall apart if he realized that there are some girls who don't give a shit what he thinks about their appearance." Go one step further: his world would fall apart if he realized that there are fat women out there who don't care what he thinks, period ( ... )

Your SVU reference pretty much made my day :)

Yay Dr. Huang! The earlier SVU episodes just aren't as fabulous without him!

I know, right? His first appearance was really quite funny -- it's like they tried to make him look strange and alien, but then softened him up (lost the glasses, less severe haircut) when he became a regular fixture.
