I thought it was a bit shallow, but entertaining enough.

my kids really like it.

I thought the storyline was pretty sweet and the humour was really good in places, but what I was expecting to really blow me away was the animation. I think the thing is that 3D animation is very new for Tartatovsky and the competition is heavy at this point. There were clearly some good ideas, but they didn't always have the impact that was intended ( ... )

I thought this came out a long while before "Frankenweenie" (though release dates differ globally of course). I would have thought this was closer in terms of its release date to "Paranorman".

I'm not sure about seeing "Frankenweenie". I've seen the short film and that was okay, but it hardly seemed like the sort of thing that would benefit from being made into a full-length 3d-animated movie. Plus I've pretty consistently felt disappointed in some way by pretty much every film I've ever seen directed by Tim Burton (with the possible exception of "Batman").

Good animation and story. But sitting through the terrible music was just painful.

IKR? What the hell was with that music?

I feel like the studios may have compromised Tartatovsky's plans here, expecting him to use particular voice actors and to help them market cheesy music. I suppose once he realised that "Power of the Dark Crystal" wasn't going to get started any time soon, he needed to get another project on the move quickly.

But yeah, I really think he did a great job providing the emotional engagement and visual quirks to keep it interesting. I was expecting something rather more exceptional from Tartatovsky though and I think he needs more time to get used to the 3D animation format before his 3D animated work is up to the same quality as his 2D animated work.

Have you seen Tartatovsky's animated prologue to the movie "Priest"? Apparently it's better than anything in the actual live action movie.

They should have given Genndy Tartakovsky half the budget of this movie and they would have gotten at least 5 times the profit.
