French Ban on Public Muslim Prayer - Practical Reasons?

this is very interesting. completely closing off streets to pray. wow.

i know it seems as though all these new laws and attitudes are a result of recent world events but i lived in paris 15 years ago and there were already serious conflicts simmering between these groups.

and in other european countries with large muslim populations. quite frankly, i don't see any easy resolution. that thought really frightens me.

Well of course the main source of these conflicts is the close ties between France and Algeria. Ever seen "Day of the Jackal"? (Not the awful remake with Bruce Willis!) The assassination was planned because Charles De Gaulle was viewed as 'giving in' to the Algerians.

Anyway, as a result of their colonial past there are now a lot of French with Algerian background in their family tree and many of them are Muslim.

French colonial history goes back a long way, but the more recent trend of many Muslims fleeing dodgy regimes for a better life in secular Europe is contributing to the existing prejudices.

I'm surprised that there aren't laws against obstructing a street like that without a permit. I mean, wouldn't an emergency vehicle be more than slightly inconvenienced by the blocks-long mobs of people?

In light of that it really seems like this could have been handled in a way that was less "Goddamn it Muslims what the hell." The response by the Muslims to it, though, looks like it was classy as hell and it's unfortunate that there's no level of politeness or class or consideration that will keep people from suggesting they be burned to death in the street. =/
