Usagi likes that Ami is somewhere between shy and sharp and that Makoto keeps dropping bits of her sweets into her lunch, telling her to try them without thinking. She goes in between awe and delight with them. She doesn't need a large group around her, she thinks.
I JUST LOVE THIS. It's so true for her, and the girls, you've got them so well. It's such an interesting reversal because in the manga/anime Usagi is the one to bring them together and make them a family, and even here she still is, but it's totally unbeknownst to her. They are together for her without really knowing why and oh my god I feel like my brain is exploding with possibilities for all this. For real. Brain, exploding.

I'm so glad you're enjoying it! I've been thinking about the idea that she, kind of like in the same vein re: the princess, being the last to know and still very overwhelmed at the idea that she has a place with the people. So that's how it all started.

That being said-
This is gorgeous. GORGEOUS. The tone is fantastic- her loneliness is palpable and her reactions to everything are very Usagi but an Usagi tempered, again, by loneliness. She needs them- all of them- so much to fit into the world and even though she manages to find a place she's still a bit unsettled- yearning for something she can't name and you show it all so well.
I especially love the girls trying to approach her without scaring her away and Minako can't help herself and tries to protect her from Mamoru and
"I know you," she says. "You have a big heart. He doesn't. Don't let it try and change you."this killed me. And I'm not even going to try to explain the Mamoru feelings this brought out because I HAVE ALL THE FEELINGS ( ... )
