Pondering on writing

Jul 25, 2012 23:07

After reading fics the last two weeks in the Teen Wolf fandom, I got to pondering about POV, which led me to reading an article on About.com about First Person & Limited and Omniscient Third Person perspective. The article mentioned that apparently most writers start out using first person, possibly because it is the more personal view point and ( Read more... )

long winded rambling, kim is being random, this is me muttering to myself, writing, what?...i'm so not procrastinating

I know if you try a first person POV (and honestly, where do they get these stats? All my fics are in 3rd POV) you will rock it to success, bb...I'd love to read it by you!!

Whoot!!

Yeah I found it a little odd that they thought most writers started with First Person, who knows, maybe they made it up, or were talking about kids *shrugs* I sometimes just feel like I have no idea about the technical side of writing, which may not be all that necessary to be a good writer, but I do think about it now and then. I feel sometimes that a lot of my writing is all alike, which may end up being my style, but I like to try new things ( ... )

See? That's what I'm thinking! I can't wrap my head around the technical side (which is why my internal editor sucks, lol!) but I approve pushing beyond the comfort zone. I'll never make the mistake of trying to change my style again, but I'm all for rearranging my own boundaries - so I totally approve!!

Go for it!! I've read a few fics by you like this and I will say, you handle it flawlessly, which is no real surprise to me.

Aww, bb...do what you can WHEN you can. I will happily wait until you are ready.

I don't think I've ever written in first person either. I think almost all of my stories have been third person with limited omniscience, focusing on a particular character's point of view. I don't really think it's a confidence thing with me though, it's just what I feel comfortable both reading and writing as I don't really read many books or fics that are in the first person, I find it harder to get into a character's headspace somehow? I don't even know how that works xD

You should definitely play about with POV though! It's fun and it's one of the things I did when on my writing course, I think it's helpful in finding what you feel comfortable with writing and challenging youself too.

There is a lot of Stiles-centric POV fics out there and I've found I'm picky with them, it's difficult to find one that's dead on in a way, but then that's the same for any character I think, and different people view characters different ways, and also I read just about all the Derek/Stiles I can get my little grabby mitts on :D

Yeah I am probably more comfortable reading third rather than first person. It just gives you more options as a writer. I want to play around maybe a little more with sticking to one character's POV, or just changing the style of writing slightly so it suits the characters whose POV I am writing.

It just seems to be really noticeable in Teen Wolf fics particularly ones from Stiles' POV though also with Derek's. It's not just the dialogue that feels like the character, it is the whole tone of the writing. I don't know, its just something I want to play around, change things up a bit. I have read a ridiculous amount of Stiles/Derek fic in the last two weeks, which is probably why this stuck out so much to me. Plus I haven't written anything for about a month and am just getting the urge to plunge into some writing again.

*hugs*

I'm currently reading Those Who Save Us by Jenna Blum.

She writes in a present tense omnipotent will no dialog quotes:

Anna clears her throat. Her voice is rough, from lack of use, Trudy assumes.

Only a bad daughter would put her mother into such a place as this, Anna says.

Trudy watches her for a minute, then stands.

How unfortunate you feel this way, she says dryly, since you're coming to live with me.

She turns her back on Anna and crosses to the closet, from which she retrieves Anna's battered maroon suitcase. Behind her she hears a scrape as Anna rises from the chair.

Is this true? Anna asks. We will be leaving right now? Today?

Cool, huh?

Cool. For whatever reason POV is something that I think about quite a bit, even if I mostly end up approaching it all the same way in my fics. But I'm just in the mood for trying something a little different. I haven't written anything for a month, but the need to get writing is starting to build again.
