Castiel stood stiffly, his hands in his pockets. He had answered Dean’s call but now wasn’t sure what to say or do. Apparently neither did Dean, who hadn’t spoken since his grumpy greeting.

“Dean why did you call me?” Castiel looked at Dean out of the corner of his eye, as if meeting his gaze full on would let Dean see all the loss and turmoil that was still swirling within him.

Dean was pacing, his feet unable to remain still, an after effect of his agitation at Castiel’s delayed response to his ‘prayer’. He stopped pacing, staring out into the darkness. “I don’t know,” he turned back to face Castiel, “why did you come and see me?”

Castiel didn’t answer. He wasn’t sure he knew why.

They lapsed into silence again, each of them staring out into the darkness rather than at each other. They had always understood so much about each other, that words had at times been unnecessary. Castiel thought this wasn’t one of those times however.

He didn’t understand what it was he wanted at the moment, let alone what Dean needed. He had thought it had been to be left alone, yet Dean had yelled himself hoarse in an attempt to get him to come here. Not knowing what to say, what Dean wanted, he waited in silence for Dean to tell him.

Several minutes passed before Dean finally spoke. “I didn’t think you were coming back,” he said quietly.

Castiel tilted his head in confusion. It wasn’t a question. It wasn’t an accusation either.

Dean wasn’t looking at Castiel as he spoke, his words given to the darkness. “Sammy’s gone. The only family I’ve got left is Bobby and…” he glanced briefly at Castiel, pausing for a moment, unsure how to continue. “Well I’ve never had much in my life.”

Castiel remained silent, finally realising what Dean wanted.

Castiel listened. He offered no judgment, no absolution. He was just there. In the moonlight he saw the unshed tears in Dean’s eyes, he offered no words, just accepted them as they were. Silently sharing the burden, the only way he knew how.

Dean’s words stopped, as abruptly as they had started. The silence didn’t feel so empty now though.

After a moment Castiel spoke, “I’m sorry.”

He had said the same thing to Dean in the motel room days ago, but now he knew why. He was sorry for everything and nothing. They had both shared so many doubts, so much sorrow and pain. Yet through it all, they had found a bond where they least expected to.

Dean turned back towards Castiel, their eyes finally meeting.

“Yeah, me too,” Dean said, his voice catching with emotion.
