What books did you get for Christmas/Hanukkah/Kwanzaa/Yule/(Insert Forgotten Holiday here)?

Christmas isn't finished here yet - my boyfriend's family isn't celebrating the holiday until the 28th so I won't receive my last gifts until then - but I got a few books this year.
- a pretty blank journal, which will probably become a traveling journal on ( Read more... )

I got Jane Yolen's Briar Rose, Philip K Dick's Four Novels of the 1960s (Ubik, The Man in the High Castle, The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch, and Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep) and Avram Davidson and Grania Davis' Marco Polo and the Sleeping Beauty

I got a really nice leather-bound edition of the complete works of Poe, a collection of stories by Saki (who I've never read before at all, but I understand is supposed to be a masterful short story writer), and The Grand Inquisitor's Manual: A History of Terror in the Name of God, by Jonathan Kirsch.

I'm really exited to read the last one. It's obviously focused on the Inquisitions, but it's about how seemingly evolved societies continue to fall into the witch-hunter mentality and continue to repeat the exact same atrocities time after time, right up to the present day. I heard an interview with the author a while back and totally had to have it.

That Kirsch book sounds fascinating. I'm trying to remember if I've read any of Saki's stories; the name sounds so familiar but glancing over the works mentioned on Wikipedia none of the titles are ringing a bell. Do let me know how those books are!

I got a copy of Mr. Punch by Neil Gaiman, which I have been wanting to check out for a long time. I also got Wicked and Son of a Witch. Aaand I got the Macbeth graphic novel that you discussed recently. :D

Neat! Let me know what you thought of Wicked - I seem to have liked it when I first read it, according to my notes, but when I think back about it I feel very negative towards the story and I'm not sure why! The third book of that trilogy was released in the past few months; I'm looking forward to reading it.

I didn't get any novels this year, which makes me sad. However, I got a book on Egyptian art, a gift card for Borders and a very lovely leather-bound journal.
