Oh yeah, fantasy counterpart cultures can be fun, particularly when it's something unique and rarely touched upon. I would love to see a good counterpart to Rome, to be honest. It's when it's the same culture over and over again (medieval England is the most common one) that I start to get frustrated. And yeah, it's lazy as all get out

Fantasy counterpart cultures can be done well; the trouble is that they usually aren't. Personally, I like Harry Turtledove's take on the idea.
The main issue with Gilneas really is the fans, to tell the truth. They took the whole "gaslight" feel of the place and ran with that, without really paying attention to either new or preexisting lore.
