Best of luck on your wedding! I hope no IRL drama llamas show up and ruin it for you.

And were you linking to the "Rift isn't a wow killer" thread? Because yeah... it's pretty stupid, and I think most people just don't GET the whole Hyper-World Theory thing Rift's set up is going for and so they assume it's boring and stupid. If anything I feel in places Trion's mistake has been to overestimate fandom's intelligence, particularly by putting into effect somewhat complex aspects of quantum physics. Personally, as someone who's tired of fantasy counterpart cultures, (and loud about it) it's nice to see something "fantasy" that actually plays with scientific theory more than it does with trite Western European history. While wow had issues with counterpart cultures to an extent, they did a good enough job at putting those "cultures" into different roles and situations and environments that didn't match their counterparts to keep me interested. That is, until Gilneas happened and fandom decided that it was time to act out their bad Jane Austen fantasies in Warcraft. -.- I hate the "Rule Britannia!" attitude IRL, particularly because I've never seen this attitude from a real Brit of our generation, but to see it take over a fantasy world I loved was too much.

They may have points about the gameplay-- I actually prefer Rift's gameplay to Wow's somehow, but because I'm a shameless button masher until I get to end game, I couldn't really tell you what it is.

Oh yeah, fantasy counterpart cultures can be fun, particularly when it's something unique and rarely touched upon. I would love to see a good counterpart to Rome, to be honest. It's when it's the same culture over and over again (medieval England is the most common one) that I start to get frustrated. And yeah, it's lazy as all get out.

Yeah, I don't think Blizzard ever intended for Gilneas to be a complete counterpart to England, partially because it's just not Blizzard's way and that's something I've always loved about Warcraft. For example there's Russian aspects to the Draenei, but there's also some Roma aspects and some middle eastern aspects, and put them in space, and you get something very different and interesting. If anything, I feel Kul Tiras would be a better direct comparison to England, since they were an island. Fandom just heard British accents and saw the Victorian British accoutrements and ran with it, ignoring all the other interesting aspects of the culture, and as an rper it ruined it for me.

Oh yeah, totally. MMOs are something where I can only really play one at a time, and I admit Rift has made me completely set WOW aside, though like I said, the take over by obnoxious anglophiles didn't help.

Fantasy counterpart cultures can be done well; the trouble is that they usually aren't.  Personally, I like Harry Turtledove's take on the idea.

The main issue with Gilneas really is the fans, to tell the truth.  They took the whole "gaslight" feel of the place and ran with that, without really paying attention to either new or preexisting lore.

And thanks!

Keeping my fingers crossed about the wedding, to some degree.  And not just about the drama-llama potential, either.

As for the link, it was really on any thread discussing other MMOs.  It seems like if you give WoW fans any leeway to talk about other MMOs, they feel like they have to sing WoW's praises and run down the rest of the genre.  Rift's just the most likely target.

Yeah, I definitely think Trion overestimated fans' actual nerdiness, to some degree.  We might catch on to the orrery cosmos, but not every WoW player is going to even know what an orrery is.

And I hear you about worgen RP.  It was bad enough before Cata (see also: my " fantasy is not history" tag), but the Victorian/gas-lamp aesthetic of Gilneas has indeed made it even worse.

...really, as far as fantasy settings go, WTB some raygun gothic with magic tossed into the mix one of these days.
