Much like this Dreamwidth user, I'm done explaining to people why fanfic is okay.  And it still mystifies me that-Sturgeon's Law or no-it's not explicitly protected under fair use.

Ach, I think that when it comes to fanfiction: If the original author says they don't want any, that should be respected (at least in so much that one doesn't post it online, or open for all...), otherwise it's fair game.

If I'd ever run across an author with a rational reason why they didn't want fanfic, I'd agree.

But when it comes to someone who cries "identity theft," shows a woeful (and possibly willful) ignorance of copyright law, seems to hold her fans in general contempt, or writes fan fiction himself and publishes it?

Sorry, but I have a hard time respecting such individuals' opinions.  Or, for that matter, such individuals themselves.  (I went into more detail in the long rant.)

I won't court a lawsuit by writing fan fiction based on their works, true.  Even with my views on fan fiction, I'm not interested in being a test case.  But I probably won't buy or read any more of their books, either.  (See: my reason for being dubious about even reading Quarantined Fics.)

True, it's not on the same level of "do I want to support this person?" as, say, this sort of nonsense.  It still does raise the question of whether or not I want to support this person.
