I sometimes think simple is better, and really complex technical icons can take forever, but might not be as well executed as a simple icon.. and I know there are some folks who think differently and would vote on an icon based on how long it may have taken the maker to do. That's another piece of unfair voting, IMHO.

I tend to vote on favorite character as a last resort if I just can't decide between icons... that's usually my tiebreaker. :)

Also, it may not always be easy to give a long detailed paragraph on why I may have voted one way or another. I tend to be at a loss for words when it comes to things like that. I try to give a good reason for why I voted the way I did. Hopefully the way I voted is good. :)

Not sure how helpful this is. but.. my thoughts. :)

Oh yeah, I've often spent way too much time trying to make an overly complicated icon that ends up turning out terribly. And the simpler looking ones often look a lot better.

It's always frustrating when there's two icons you just can't choose between; sometimes I'm glad I don't have to vote on the icons here because there are so many ones I like!

Your votes have been fine I think; just some of the votes have been really useless and I think some of the icon makers aren't finding them helpful at all.

I really appreciate the feedback, thanks!

Heh sorry, I never know what to leave unscreened and what not to, so I tend to err on the side of screening everything. Also really looking forward to having you back in the next round!

(Feel free to unscreen.)

Is the purpose of this community for expert-level icon makers to give each other constructive criticism? Or it it for Farscape fans of any icon-making calibre to look at the pretty icons and vote ( ... )

Eep, I'm sorry if I came across as being offended. I wasn't, honest! I think you have a really swell comm here. I just ... um ... sortof got on a roll. I hope you didn't feel rolled over. Mea culpa. Maybe next round I'll even try to play. (Hey, the worst I can do is give someone else one more round, right?)

Oh good! I wasn't sure if you were annoyed overall or not. (Clearly I am terrible at communicating with people effectively!)

I appreciate your thoughts and no problem with going on about stuff at all! Also that would be awesome if you wanted to participate too! I might start the signups for the next round tonight or tomorrow actually.

Actually that sounds like an okay idea to me. I can make a post about it and see if the comm would prefer it. Maybe make the reasons optional (tho like you said, with at least one).

I agree with you that it's mostly subjective, and even when you try to vote focused on technical you end up going at least with the type of icons you like more often than not.

Sorry for commenting super late, nobody will probably even see this post now which sucks cause I have a lot to say!

Thanks for making this useful post :)

I fullheartedly agree. It's important to vote in a way that corresponds to the quality of the icons - not which ones you like the most, but the icons that show most skill - or the least amount of lack of skill. The skill can be very technical like how seamless a blending or cutting out of a background is, or it can relate to the impact of the icon like how skillfully the maker conveys the intended effect (like how well the coloring fits). I've often voted for an icon I didn't really like if I thought it had the best image quality/sharpening, and against icons that showed lovely creativity and design but the execution didn't come through ( ... )

Late too, but I really liked the way you broke this down. Your tl'dr summation especially really made me think, and it's something I'm going to try and apply to my own voting in the future.
