I've been eyeing those combo record players for a couple of years but not quite being able to talk myself into buying one. I've got a fair amount of vinyl and cassettes that I'd like to convert to CD, but once the stack is gone-through, that would be the end of its usefulness for me, since I've got two CD / cassette-playing stereos in the library already. Until one of them croaks, I can't quite convince myself of the necessity.

I'm so glad you're enjoying it. I spent hours with my parents' record player listening to my CATS album and to Mannheim Steamroller albums and Jimmy Spheeris and Queen and the Eagles. Whatever my folks had around, mostly, but the CATS double record set was mine, and I bought it with my own money when I was, like, ten. I also had some Disney picture discs which are probably worth something now, and the Hobbit record, and one that was totally cool about Aladdin that I don't know if my dad still has. I think I listened to that record player more than anyone else in the house, honestly.

There's just something so cool about how they work that a CD doesn't rival for me. I like CD sound, but for some things you just want that staticky hiss and pop.

I was going to say I can't believe the douchebag on his cell phone in the ice, but I do believe it. People are just that stupid. We can hope that if he kills anyone it's only himself. No way in hell am I going out there while it's this bad. Sheesh.

Some of those scratches and pops are old friends of mine.

CDs are more efficient, I'll admit, but when I get 'round to getting rid of the old record player I'll be a little sad; we've been through a lot together. I've never been upset about replacing a CD player, several of which, BTW, I've gotten rid of while the old turntable just kept a goin'....

(and don't get me started on album cover art or liner notes you can actually read without a magnifying glass)

Speaking of dubious musical taste (*cough*i can haz*cough*) that song Dan and I tried to play for you...well, Dan did great, but there's no rivaling hammered dulcimer.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BaNwTYJrYtA if you wanna hear the original.

I'm both horrified and fascinated to see that there is a "course on angels" available through the Related Videos sidebar.
Don't scroll down! They may lure you in... (9_9) {that's an eyeroll, I'm inaugurating a new smiley}

Onto more cheerful subjects (or not?) Maybe you should schedule the next meet-up-to-play, since I've been having bad luck picking times for you. We could come into Tulsa, too. You know, when there isn't ice.

Sorry to say this, but Oklahomans aren't good at Winter Weather...

Yeah, I've got an album (another vinyl one), "Winter Solstice: Hammered Dulcimer Music for Christmas, Hanukkah and Solstice" by John McCutcheon. It's one of my favorites.

Yeah, we'll try and set up a jam sometime--when the weather is more agreeable.

Don't apologize--Oklahomans are dubious drivers at the best of times ("Yield...uh, that means everyone will yield to ME, right?"). Barbara and I ventured out to get a few groceries today and nearly got creamed twice by people who were driving like there was no snow or ice at all. We were thinking of going up to Kansas tomorrow, but after our short trip today I'm not so sure....

I'm glad you are enjoying the stereo, dude. Play whatever you like, that's what gifts are for. :)

We didn't make it to Kathy's either, although apparently Rob, Elspeth, Dana, Jane, and a few others risked life and limb to get there, and then they went to the movies. Me, I'm pretty sure we couldn't have made it out of the neighborhood, and Mandy's dad was trapped by four-foot drifts around his car and the road by his house closed down by the police. I'm bummed we didn't get to go, but Mandy and I had a good Xmas just sitting here opening our presents. Neither of us feels very good today, so it was probably for the best.
