Snow and old records

Okay, everyone else is doing their holiday posts, so here's mine.

We didn't go up to Kansas to see my folks as we'd planned, because, well.... BLIZZARD! My folks called last night and being the sensible people they are, told us to just stay put. My mom said that she was thinking of just postponing Christmas dinner because they were hammered by the same storm that we did and some of my family lives in the outlying areas around Parsons, so they might not be able to make it in either.

We were surprised on Christmas Eve's Eve (Dec. 23) by sargon999 and namah_darling giving us a small combination radio/CD/cassette/record player (remember cassettes and records?). It's in a funky cool retro looking wooden box. The radio is a an analog dial, fer Gaia's sake! My record player whet kaflooey a year or so back (Man, I only bought it about 25 years ago. Nothing lasts anymore!), so on Christmas Eve I plugged it in and put on some music that I haven't heard in years. Ya know, there is something that is just sort of cool and magical/mechanical about a record player that a CD player lacks; you can actually -SEE- a record player working. I thought for a bit on what to christen it with--thought about some Hoyt Axton, and then it occurred to me--the perfect song/album; Gordon Lightfoot's OLD DAN'S RECORDS:

"Dig out old Dan's records,
Bring out old Dan's records!
We will dance the whole night long,
It's fun to play the old time songs,
If old Dan could see us now
I know he'd be so proud!"

THEN--I played some Hoyt Axton.

(Yeah, I can see sargon999 rolling his eyes at my musical tastes, but hey...)

Anyway, got up this morning, fixed coffee, finally got the dogs to go outside and do their business (they wouldn't last night--can't say as I blame them, but boy can they hold it), and opened up our presents to each other. Barb got me a new bathrobe (my old terrycloth one was starting to look like Hagrid's beard--if his beard were navy blue, but you get the idea), the new deLint collection of Newford stories, and a horrible calendar--A Dr. Horrible calender, that is.

We were invited over by Kathy and Richard for Christmas Dinner, and we were going to go but I realized that it was going to take a lot longer to dig out and de-ice the car than I thought --and the few cars that went down the street in the time I was doing that were going kind of sideways. One asshole I swear was talking on a cell phone while he was doing this. I mean, what was he saying? "Wow! It's really dangerous out here! Anyway, I just thought I'd call and let you know what a moron I am." Sorry we didn't make it, K and R, but it's still just not nice to be on the roads--at least in our neighborhood.

Anyway, got that done, played with the dogs in the snow and we're both safe and warm (no power outages) and later I'm gonna take a nice hot Christmas soak and maybe play some more records. Hmmm.... C.W. McCall or Jethro Burns....?

(sorry, sargon999, but I -AM- really enjoying it!)
