I know I should have asked this question last week, but better late than never. What were your fantasy fiction highlights of 2009?

What were the best fantasy books of 2009?

And what were the best things you read in the genre last year, regardless of their original publication date.

I came to love the Kushiel books by Jaqueline Carey.

Also loved the new Wheel of Time book, I felt it was the kick that the series needed. The dialogue was much better, and the need to keep everything to oneself thus bringing upon much misunderstandings and angst is gone. Though it does get a bit talky at times.

I also finally finished the Dark Tower series and OMG it had some spectacular moments.

I should be one of those people who keep lists of everything they read during the year, 'cos these lists are "assuming I haven't forgotten something". But assuming I haven't ( ... )

Silk, by Caitlin R Kiernan -- Her debut novel, this gets raves as great as those I gave The Red Tree; plus arguably somewhat more accessible to those wanting lots of overt things happening. Seriously, cannot rave about this enough. I'm not sure whether this or The Red Tree is the best book I read this year, but definitely one of them ( ... )

A lot of mine wound up being series and trades. My ultimate favorite gem of the year was Santa Olivia by Jacqueline Carey. There really wasn't anything that could top that spectacular journey.

The others included:
* The Astonishing X-men run by Joss Whedon
* Percy Jackson vs The Olympians series by Rick Riordan (I never realized I could love YA until this series)
* Flood! A Novel in Pictures by Eric Drooker
* World War Z by Max Brooks
* Frostbitten by Kelley Armstrong
