This is a great entry and I wish I could summon the brain-parts to say anything specific about it now before tumbling off to sleeeep (it's midnight over her.. I have work tomorrow). But let's just say it's very interesting! \o/

(03: he nosebleeds in front of naked Nami and even thanks her for letting him see... evidence points to straight or bi, I'd say.)

You know, that's always a question that bugged me. Who is Usopp's best friend? I've seen in many fics it being depicted as Luffy (with good reason of course) but is it an official setup? 8| Just because while Usopp gets off on immaturity when he's with Luffy, I always found Sanji and Usopp to have a more... substantial relationship? Then again, there are different requirements for a "Best Friend", different for different people.

.... I can also really see Usopp doing that nervous gesture with the hands. XD That's so sweet in a way.

f-ffff tl;dr much. fantasyfan17 January 20 2010, 02:35:53 UTC
I guess it really does come down to personal interpretation. Which is why I had first stab at Sanji and Luffy in second. Luffy is the friend that reminds Usopp not to grow up too fast, that there's always some kind of silver lining even if Usopp's never been very good at seeing it. Like you said, he gets a lot more immaturity in that relationship. Not to say that Luffy can't be serious about some things, but sometimes he's just...I think that Usopp would feel guilty about potentially depressing him with it or something, you know? Luffy's a bright spot and just the chance to be a boy.

Now Sanji is just entirely different. Because if Usopp feels the need to be serious, or goof off a little, or if he just really really needs company that doesn't require him to talk when he doesn't feel like it, the kitchen is the first place he'll go. Sanji gets to see a lot of Usopp's less confident side because he deserves a little honesty for talking to Usopp like he's a capable human being. Without being harsh or condescending about it. Usopp doesn' ( ... )

*jumps in* I don't think any intra-crew relationship terms are official, really. (Not even Zoro being the first mate is!) Personally, I tend to think of Luffy as Usopp's best friend and Sanji as Usopp's "best friend who isn't Luffy, and who's mostly sane". I think Sanji's the one he's most likely to turn to if he needs a sympathetic ear and/or good advice. But I disagree that Usopp's relationship with Luffy isn't just as substantial as with Sanji. Sure, they're noisy and goofy together a lot, though not always, but that doesn't mean they're not also genuinely close. IMO, being free to let out their childish sides is just part of what being a pirate and living your life to the fullest means to both of them.

Usopp would throw his life and his pride away for Luffy's sake: I think he'd do the same for Sanji and the rest of the crew as well, but it hasn't been shown, or not as clearly (as opposed to stepping into danger for them, which he certainly does).

On the other hand, I think Usopp is Sanji's best friend, pure and simple. So maybe ( ... )

"best friend who isn't Luffy, and who's mostly sane".

(for the record, the truth of that burns with the intensity of a thousand suns.)

I didn't mean to imply that the relationship between Usopp and Luffy isn't as substantial as his relationship with Sanji, so much as that it's substantial in different ways. I mean, you don't take a four-ton bat to the head and go on to make emphatic speeches about the dream of just anybody. And while I'm sure they'd all do that kind of thing for each other, you're right, there is quite a difference in what's been shown for fact. You've said somewhere, I think, while talking about a relationship between Usopp and Zoro, that Luffy is the most important person in both their lives. And I can't say it isn't true, either, because I could see Usopp downing his pride or giving his life up for Luffy remind me to fully cultivate some kind of plot bunny for thatIn a way Luffy is the most important person for all of them, right ( ... )
