When I moved into my apartment in August, 2018, among the other items I put on display on my window sill were my collection of demitasse cups and saucers:

Cats and nick-nacks do not mix well. And, watch all shelving! You'd be surprised how cats can get up on them in places you'd never think they could! Especially when my cats were kittens and younger cats, most fragile nick-nacks were put away. I have a bunch of Swarovski crystal figurines that used to belong to Ray's parents. We finally put them out when I got an enclosed glass cabinet where the kitties couldn't get them.

It's nice to have collections that have meaning form within a family

Cats can be a menace to anything breakable, oh yes!

Out on the interwebz, I see vids of cats methodically knocking stuff to the ground, but none of my cats have ever done that. Plus, since some fool declawed Smoke, jumping and grabbing is no longer something he can do, so anything up high is probably safe. *fingers crossed* FanSee

Reuben would knock your lovely china off for fun. One thing I've learned is never grab a cat who is amongst your ornaments as that usually leads to destruction of said ornaments.

Smoke hasn't shown any interest in knocking stuff off. Neither did either of my previous cats, Razor and Ziva, and that never changed.

I did update my original post, however, with my rationale for what I did and my strategy going forward which boils down to keeping my fingers crossed and hoping. FanSee

Cats love high places, so I don't think the shelves are safe. Some friends of ours have a ledge that runs above two of their living room walls. They have them set up just for their cats, with a house up there and lots of places for them to hide.

OMG, my Razor and Ziva would have loved that. Even when he was old and sick, Razor could still jump and climb and would do so. He wanted to be King of the Mountain as much as possible. Not so with Smoke, at least so far.

I did edit my original post with my thoughts about the cups' new location. FanSee

Beautiful collects. Good idea to move them. We don't have animals/cats, but I understand they can be sneaky!

Cats aren't usually sneaky. Bold is more their style. They'll look you in the eye and deliberately do something forbidden while you race toward them.

Smoke and I are working out well. Turns out I'm highly trainable. FanSee
