I will only use the self-checkout if I am in an extreme hurry. I prefer to interact with people but, more importantly, I want to maintain jobs at the supermarket. Likewise, I go into the insurance company office to pay for my insurance - I wont do it over the internet.
I was all for self-checkout in the beginning, but found that they did indeed cut back on the number of registers manually operated. Still, when Walt was alive and we bought $150 -$200 worth of groceries on our monthly 'big' shopping trip, it was a much faster check-out. I scanned, and he bagged. Not only was that faster, but he bagged in an organized way: all frozen food together, produce together, etc., so that we could put away faster when we got home.
I don't think having the self-checkout option at Home Depot is impacting hiring. The contractors buying loads of lumber or all the fixtures for a bathroom aren't doing self-checkout: it's just us little guys with two cans of paint or the gear for hanging pictures who get spared waiting in line for half an hour to buy our bits and bobs. There's only one store I shop at that has self checkout lanes and they're not geared for the full-cart style grocery shopping I often do, but I use them when I can. I'd use them more if they were better set up for my style of shopping.
We always bring our own bags and my favorites are from my old grocery store, Publix. They're sturdy, cute, and have the perfect handle lengths. It's surprisingly common for the handles to be too long for someone as short as me to carry without them dragging on the ground.
I am well aware of the problems you short guys have. My sister Debbie was 4'10" but at 71 has shrunk some. It's not only shopping bags that aren't sized right, it's most chairs and lots of cabinets and all sorts of things.
I always use the self-service check-outs. It's usually quicker, I like being able to pack my own groceries in my own time, rather than have them shoved at me, and some of the assistants at the other checkouts can be quite rude or annoying, so I much prefer it.
I always bring my own bags. You get charged for taking plastic bags here - although I already used my own bags before then, partly because I don't like using unnecessary plastic, partly because the plastic bags are so flimsy.
I will use self-checkout when available and if I don't have too many little things. And I always bring my reusable canvas bags. I have a lot and Target even gives .05 cents per bag for bringing them. :)
I always use self-checkout and if MIL is with me I force her to use it as well. I always bring my own bags (even before it was fashionable and in the USA when every checkout chick looked at you like you had two heads). In our capital state ACT and ALDI they don't supply plastic bags which I think is a great idea. My fave is from Woolworths which has hessian handles and the other one which is parasilk.
And as you know I'm short too but these bags seem to be OK.
