This episode worked for me too, and I could see myself getting into this show if it's picked up. It has potential; the episode did well introducing the new characters and world and I'm interested enough to tune in for more. I think it can do well.

Like you I liked the outside veiw of Dean and Sam, and I really, really agree about the monsters. Vampires are probaby the only monsters in SPN that just doesn't work for me, so I'm all for something else and Ghouls and Djinn work well both because they are interesting and layered monters, but they also haven't been done to death in popular culture!.

I especially like the Djinn. I wonder if it's possible to have sympathetic ghouls though! A good challenge. :)

I am pretty finicky about tv shows, so I'm actually very impressed that i didn't run screaming. Not everything can be as good as our Actual Show. :)

What a great, upbeat review of an episode that I reeeeeally found blechy.

I wish they hadn't dumped all those characters on us at once, but picked a couple of the more integral relationships and focused on those, just barely teasing at the others. And if they couldn't be true to canon re. SPN's shifters, they should've picked a different monster or done away with them altogether. Three 'crime' families would've been plenty, anyway.

I found the casting rather bland. But I agree with you, I LOVED what little snippet of outsider POV we got on the Winchesters. You are spot on, the way you described them. I am a huuuuuge outsider POV junkie, in this fandom. *makes grabby hands*

I seriously doubt Bloodlines will get picked up, though. For me, it came off as just another vapid, glossy CW ensemble show with a paranormal theme and soap-opera underpinnings. They sucked everything trademark out of the franchise.

PS .... Now you must write outsider POV, chugging down your list. 'Kay?

I'll add it to the list. :D

I am pretty sure it will get picked up.... just because it is crafted exactly to CW standards from the guys who've been making SPN for so long. I'm hoping that we don't actually lose any talent to Bloodlines tho.... I am still smarting over losing Edlund to Revolution, which I still know less than nothing about.

Getting to see some outsider!POV of the boys is always great and I wouldn't have minded if they had snuck in more of that here. If I met the guys in a dark alley, I'd run away fast. :) Kinda like Garth said in "Sharp Teeth", the jawlines and the hair are intimidating. ;) And here Dean cracks a joke right after decapitating a dude and Sam whips out his gun to emphasize his point about silver bullets working - that would've scared the shit out of me.

As a single episode it was okay and I can even live with the boys not being there more, but the premise of the spin-off with its monster families is not something I find deeply fascinating. Though if someone wrote Ennis/David, I might give the fic a go. ;)

I would have preferred the ep to come earlier in the season. It's not so much that I minded that they used a whole SPN ep as a pilot, but rather, that they put it at such a crucial time when we are all on tenterhooks about the mark of Cain, and Abaddon and such.

I can hardly stand TV shows... Supernatural is so good, anything else is bound to suck by comparison, but I thought the show had more potential than I was expecting. :)

I was looking for a positive review to offset my very negative one. There's always something I miss, so I look for opposite reactions whenever mine is overwhelmingly "NO."

I really, really like what you said about real-life Sam and Dean. I doubt any of us could stay in the same room with them for very long. I think we'd watch them interact from a distance and think they were adorable until we got a real good, up-close look at them. Dean in bad-ass mode isn't just bad-ass, he's scary as hell.

I can go with the shifters being quick-shifts like that because they're closer to the Alpha. I like the idea. I'm more than willing to believe that what Sam and Dean hunt are the rejects of the shifter world. But in order to reel me in, they've got to work on that storyline. It wasn't Sam and Dean not being in the show that made me unhappy--I can go an ep without them being upfront, no problem, but I wish the payoff had been as good as the ep 'Bitten'.

Thanks so much for sharing your review!

I'm really happy to offer a positive review! Thanks for coming over to comment.

I think about real life Sam and Dean a lot. I like to think about what they used to be like -- about that enthusiastic 19 year old Dean that Lisa fell in love with, or that sweet (if secretive) kid Jess fell in love with -- compared to how traumatized and hardened they are now. I really want curtain fic for them. I'd love if SPN chose a year (s11!!) to radically change directions, to make a real life for them. I really don't want them to go out in a blaze of glory. :P

I've never been partial to the so-called "lite" episodes. That said, I rather liked this one. I would have rather seen more Sam and Dean. All the same, I bow to your interpretation of them ( ... )

If something new were really to happen....
what if Dean becomes King of Hell???

o_O

It totally could happen with the setup as it is right now...

and Castiel takes over Heaven.... what would happen??? And what would happen to Sam?
