I like this kind of ep. I guess you know tptb could've been a little more sensitive as to when they chose to schedule this time out, but I mean, I expected it to be a whole lot worse than what we actually got.
I liked the atmosphere of the monster bar. It reminded me of the bar in Man's Best Friend with Benefits. It has a kind of Angel vibe to me.
I think that it's cool to have a city be run by monsters. Chicago seems like an interesting choice. TBH i know very little about Chicago. I didn't know it had a Gold Coast. I thought that was California?? :P
I liked the main guy Ennis. The name Ennis is huge in Comics, in case you've never heard of Garth Ennis, horror writer extraordinaire. Ennis wrote Hellblazer during the 90s and went on to make me run screaming from Preacher.
I really liked the Romeo and Juliet story, which surprised me. I was fully prepared to hate them both and somehow they won me over. I like that the shifter boy wanted completely out, and that the werewolf girl is trapped and controlled by her family. I love the ideal of them running off.
Seriously though guys, the Bloodlines thing makes perfectly clear why the shifter boy doesn't shed his skin. Hellshalfacre points out in her review, and I totally agree, that these monsters are closer to their alpha bloodlines and therefore more comfortable in their powers. As Hells put it, born not bitten. In fact, it would make perfect sense that the only shifters that Sam and Dean have had to Hunt are ones who are less in control of their powers, most likely hybrids born to humans like the ones in both Skin and Monster Movie claimed, and less in control. Idk, I had no problem with it. I wonder if these shifters have access to their marks' memories like the one in Skin did.
I must be a terrible person... but I felt like the horrible way the werewolf girl was treated could actually go somewhere. I mean, I think it is kind of interesting to see a female character start at the absolute low point in her life and hopefully fight her way up from that, somehow defy her family's intentions to sell her off and learn to believe again that she is more than just a bitch no matter what they are telling her. With a good writer, that could work... especially if she gets a female friend to talk to instead of just relying on the shifter boy and their doomed affair. I did like the way she wolfed out and snapped her chains to protect her beloved tho. That works for me! And they way he stopped her from killing, was very good.
I was a little shocked at Ennis's cold blooded murder of the crazy guy. Is Ennis really a cop? What was the evidence that he is a cop? I missed it.
I felt like the sister, Margo, could use more development. She is too flat right now. The moment I liked her was when she played that she was glad her brother had come home. :)
But I liked the werewolf brother. He was evil and handsome, and had a good spark of watchability.
Ghouls and Djinn are good choices for the other monsters.... I don't want to see Too Many Vampires.
I love when Sam and Dean show up and are viewed by the Third Party. It really works for me. :D I know, everybody wants to see the Sam and Dean Show! but .... I mean, don't you ever wonder what it would be like to actually meet them? In reality here is what it would be like:
1. Dean is a stone cold killer. You would fear him.
2. Sammy is just too enormous. You would also fear him.
3. They would not be quite clean enough. They are drifters living out of their car for the most part. Yes, they have a bunker now, but they just tore off at the end of the ep to go to wherever Cas is.
4. Neither Sam nor Dean would be as pretty as Jared and Jensen are. Big, deadly, smart, somewhat sketchily groomed, with lightning deadly reflexes. Notice how "Deadly" comes in there twice.
5. They gain your trust and then lie to you. Dean doesn't even care enough to make his lies convincing. And when they do spill, Dean just wanders off while Sam does the talking.
6. Right now, Dean bears the mark of Cain, so he is a lot more grim than usual. In the old day, he would warm up to you. But not now.
7. And Sam is just completely weighed down with it all, and is this far from a deathwish. ):
I think about this because when I was growing up in rural West Virginia I had these two cousins. Tall and gorgeous, they liked fast cars and loose women and heavy drinking, and hunting was pretty much all they did. I got to watch as that lifestyle took its toll, as they made less and less of themselves as the years rolled by. ... Their sisters did much better for themselves, but those two never quite landed on their feet. In real life, Sam and Dean would be my cousins. :P And sadly, John Winchester would be my uncle who came back from Nam ptsd and is now disabled from exposure to Agent Orange. Just think about Bobby, who no one in Sioux Falls thought of any better than "that old drunk." ):
Also, I just never cease to love how Baby is completely conspicuous. Everyone in the world would whip their heads around whenever she drove by.
Also? In my experience, old cars have an old car smell inside them. I know Dean keeps her clean as a whistle, but old cars smell like gasoline and different types of oil. Sam and Dean would always have that old car smell clinging to them, wouldn't they?
Anyway, I liked it a lot more than I thought I would. And hey, I am watching the One Hundred, which is pretty meh; Bloodlines can't possibly do worse. :)
