My read of this has always been that Darkstar thinks he's super important and would LOVE to be married to the future ruling Princess of Dorne. I don't think he loves Arianne as a person, I think he loves her as a potential conquest.
But that's just my read of his majorly ego-centric character.
I actually read it as addressed to Garin! At first I thought maybe he meant it in reference to Arianne, but then changed my mind:
"Forgive me, princess," said Garin softly, "but I do not like that man."
"A pity," Drey said. "I believe...etc."
Since Drey is responding to Garin's statement about not liking him, I interpreted it as him saying Darkstar was half in love with *Garin*. Which is why I was intrigued!
Ugh, you're right, I totally misread that conversation the first time around.
I don't think this is actually about honestly-felt love for Garin, though, and I do read it as being sarcasm. It just doesn't fit remotely with any other contextual clues we have about Darkstar, and doubly so with GRRM's confessed surprise (in some interview or another) at Darkstar's subtle fandom popularity as a "bad boy". I think that suggests that GRRM is surprised at people reading too much into the character, period.
I honestly don't get what's going on with Darkstar at all, unless he's some kind of catspaw/pawn of other powers in the series OR he's just randomly trying to make a name for himself because he resents Arthur Dayne's fame. Either way, he's kind of an irritating character, in my view.

But now I'm just confused. Heh.
