Angel of Death
Web Series Review by Jessica Dwyer
Web based series are hit and miss. I’ve seen some that have better production values than most high end TV series, and others that I couldn’t make it through the first five minutes.
The new web series starring Action Goddess Zoe Bell, Angel of Death, is one of the better ones and has the talent to back it up.
The story is not that original (a hit woman decides to change her ways after a life changing experience) but the way it plays out is. The life changing experience is a knife through her skull for one thing.
There are 10 episodes of “ANGEL OF DEATH” written by comic master Ed Brubaker. Bell plays a remorseless assassin, Eve, employed by a ruthless crime family. After suffering a severe head trauma while on the job, she begins to hallucinate and becomes haunted by her victims. As a result of the injury, Eve is determined to make up for her past crimes by seeking revenge on those who ordered the hits in the first place -- her mob employers.
Along the way we get some good action with Eve kicking ass and taking names, as well as meeting interesting characters played by other stars genre fans are sure to recognize like Lucy Lawless (Xena herself) the always entertaining Doug Jones (Abe Sapien as you well know) and Ted Raimi (everyone knows who Ted is…and if you don’t shame on you.)
Eve isn’t a nice girl and the first episode showcases this. Bell gets to show her tough side and makes mincemeat out of whoever gets in her way. It’s great to see her career really starting to take off after being “undercover” as a stunt woman for years. These types of roles are made for her talents.
Supporting cast wise Doug Jones gets to shine in a comedic role with no make-up (we here at Fangirl like it when Dougie gets to show his real face) as Eve’s doctor with a drug problem. As he says, he can do his job as high as Hendrix. It’s fun to see Doug do something like this which is so not the usual role for him. Give him more comedy people, dude is funny!
The style of the episodes is laid out like a graphic novel, with comic like cells within the scenes. It’s really like a comic book come to life and the over the top style of the action scenes really brings that point home. Think Kill Bill mixed with Painkiller Jane.
This is a great series with a lot of great visuals and fun performances. It’s something you’d likely see on a network like F/X; edgy, dark, and blackly comedic.
www.crackle.com will be showing Angel of Death. The episodes will be 8-10 minutes each and will premiere on Crackle over a course of two weeks beginning on March 2 and concluding March 13.
