It sounds like you had a wonderful and relaxing holiday! :D I'm glad that watching the program was thought provoking. Letting go of grudges is so hard to do. I try, but there are some things that I just find hard to forgive. :/
The Lovely Bones was incredibly sad, but it's a great book. I also like Alice Sebold's memoir Lucky. I haven't read the other three, but I will check out Amazon to read the synopsis of each.
The pictures and news reports of the devastation caused by the tsunami are heartbreaking. The widespread disaster has caused much suffering. Thanks for posting the links-it's inspiring to see the response to this.
Yeah, I have the same problem with grudges too. Even though there is no reason for holding onto it, still keep doing it sometimes. The event of the Christmas Truce is really quite remarkable though.
The books I bought were really out of accident, I didn't know much at all about them. Hitchhiker's is really famous and funny apparently. I heard about Last Orders a few years ago through the film, with excellent reviews, about a group of old friends carrying out a deceased friend's last wishes. The Dressing Station is about a surgeon's first hand autobiographical experience all over the world working in some war-torn and impoverished countries, very realistic from the back cover.
*sigh* I just saw the toll is up to 68000 and climbing still, and probably many times more people are going to struggle much more because of it. I agree, it's inspiring to see people rallying to help.
That Christmas Truce show was nice and really made an mpression on me too. It's funny that you mentioned it, because things about the show have poppped into my head since.
Maybe those books you got will be ones you'll want to re read, so it'll be OK to have them around. I was talking to my best friend last night about re reading a book by an author we both like, but she's had the book since July. As she says, she's a collector of books. I, on the other hand, am a voracious devourer of books.
There's a lot to think about right now, isn't there?
There is actually another video/documentary(?) you can get through one of the links on wikipedia, if you are interested. A film is being made about it too, I hope they are realistic and respectful with the situations and those involved.
Yes, they seem like really good books from the reviews I read off the net. Plus Mum has been reading a lot lately and looking for more, so it's good for her too, though "The Lovely Bones" I heard is really sad, so may not be suitable for her.
We are so lucky with what we have. There is no comparison in a way, reminds me again of how I should make the most of what I've been given...
:) *hugs back* I was going to turn on the heater at night if it wasn't for the fact it is actually summer here, weather gone haywire once again. Hope you all are keeping warm and those sick are recovering and feeling better!
