Alicia didn't know what to call the arrangement she had with Miles and this fact made meeting up with him even more exciting. They meet up once a week to help each other relax and there was no method that was out of the question. They bumped into each other in St. Mungo's after not seeing each other for many years. Alicia had severely injured herself during a Quidditch match against the Chudley Cannons and Miles was the Healer in training that tended to her injuries.
"Fell off your broom again, eh Spinnet?"
"Oh shove it, Miles. Occupational hazard."
"Right."
"I never could understand how you stayed on your broom so easily."
"What's that supposed to mean?"
Alicia didn't feel it was necessary to further comment. If he didn't get it that wasn't her fault and wasn't going to take the time to explain it to him either. She inwardly giggled as she thought about finding out on her own how he managed to stay on his broom with that big head of his. Perhaps it was due to all that hot air, but wouldn't that make it difficult and not easier? She dismissed these thoughts.
"Undressing me in your mind again?"
Alicia tossed him a dirty look. During their time at Hogwarts he would often joke and make such comments to her, but that was years ago. She couldn't believe he was starting again, but then again perhaps he never stopped. Not intentionally. Old habits die hard.
"No. So when is the Healer coming to check on me? Soon, I hope."
"What do you think I'm doing here?"
"You're the Healer?"
"Yes, do you have a problem with that?"
"Yes, I do. I want to recover from my injuries, not leave St. Mungo's missing half my brain."
Miles chuckled. Alicia had never heard him laugh before, not this deep, rich laugh she was currently hearing. She was used to the shrill, slightly wheezy laugh she knew him for during their childhood and some of their Hogwarts years. He didn't laugh much while they were at Hogwarts, not around her anyways. Then again they didn't spend enough time together for her to hear him laugh, even at her own expense.
The day she was released from St. Mungos, Miles decided to visit her at home. He didn't call it a visit. He called it a post treatment checkup. It made sense, but Alicia didn't know what to believe. Miles wasn't the most honest person in the world, but perhaps that had changed. She thought about denying him entry into her home, but decided against it. She didn't have the energy to argue with him and even less energy to keep him away.
He got really close when he was checking her arm, but this was to be expected. It felt strange because they were no longer in a hospital setting. They were in her home and she could have sworn she felt his leg brushing against hers at one point. When she showed him to the door he unexpectedly stole a kiss from her, leaving her stunned.
"What are you doing?" she asked him as she pulled away. She would've pushed him away, but she didn't want to risk straining her arm. It had been through enough lately.
"I'm only doing what we've both been wanting for years."
"Is that why you stopped by? To take advantage of me? How many times do I have to tell you that I'm not interested in you?"
"Until you mean it."
"I do mean it."
"I don't believe you."
"You never did."
Miles sighed. His mind wandered to the time he asked her to the Yule Ball and she turned him down. She consistently turned him down every time he attempted to get close to her. He called her out on it and this made her withdraw even more. He remembered going with someone else since she refused him and was shocked to see her at the Yule Ball with Eddie Carmichael. He was so hurt by this that he didn't even bother hexing either of them. Instead he made it a point to enjoy himself and show his date a good time. He smiled smugly when he noticed Alicia staring at him and his date a few times. The stare was one of confusion, which pleased him. He wanted her to be the confused one of the two for once.
"Why do you resist?"
"Isn't it obvious? I resist because I don't like you, Miles."
"I don't believe that. When we were kids we used to enjoy each other's company, but then we started Hogwarts and pretended to not know each other because we were sorted into different houses. For two years we spent the holidays together, which was easy because our fathers were co-workers and our mothers liked to share gossip with each other. At Hogwarts we hardly interacted. Once I tried to ask you a simple question that would have never hinted at us being friends outside of Hogwarts but you ignored me. Then the year we stopped talking altogether you show up in my bedroom crying because your parents were divorcing and I was there for you. You kissed me then slept over and I respected your boundaries because I knew you were vulnerable. I didn't want you to think I was taking advantage of you. The next morning you were gone and we never spoke of it. Now tell me you don't like me. Insist that I'm taking advantage of you now. Please do enlighten me, Ms. Spinnet."
Alicia stood silent. She couldn't believe he remembered that happening between them. She hadn't forgotten about it either, but she had repressed the memory because she had enjoyed that kiss more than she should have. She loved curling up to him that night and falling asleep on his chest. It felt safe and for the first time that week she felt that everything was right in the world even though her family was falling apart. Miles started to head to the door. It was obvious that she wasn't going to talk about it.
"Wait," she called out.
He stopped walking then turned to look at her.
"What's with the change of mind?"
"We need to settle this once and for all."
"I couldn't agree more."
