They were never suppose to know about each other. They had taken it upon themselves to be discreet about their presence and it worked for some time. Marcus didn't have anyone harassing him about Quidditch and Katie didn't have anyone interfering with her work. He trained during all sorts of hours of the day. He'd try anything that could improve his game. She always got her pictures in on time and they always made the paper. Her entire career was a smooth one, but this would soon change.
The paper decided to focus on Marcus Flint after he got into a brawl with a player from an opposing team. After that incident everyone wanted to know more about him. The thing was getting an interview with Marcus was extremely difficult. Most reporters and photographers who got near him would be injured in the most atrocious manner. Katie was aware of this when she was given her assignment. That is why secrecy was of the utmost importance. One false move could mean a hospital visit. She didn't truly believe Marcus would hurt her, but the fear was still there. She didn't want to risk it. She knew he would surely ruin her career if he caught her because he would destroy her work.
Katie played Quidditch for most of her life. She seriously considered pursuing it once she left Hogwarts, but life had other plans for her. She wanted to try new things and that's how she got into photography. She applied for the job at once. She started off taking pictures of simple things, but once she proved some skill with this she moved onto Quidditch stars.
Katie had been a long time fan of the Appleby Arrows. So much so that when she had to take pictures of Galvin Gudgeon, seeker of the Chudley Cannons, she couldn't help but laugh as she thought about the fact that he did miss several excellent opportunities to catch the snitch during a match against the Arrows. She wasn't laughing now as she was faced with her tough assignment.
She always wore a hood to obscure her face from sight. She arrived at Bodmin Moor promptly and saw all the players doing their warm up laps. A small smile graced her features as she got her camera out. As she carefully started to walk forward she felt herself bump into something - a force field. She fell back and scrambled to her feet angrily. She hadn't been expecting such magic and settled for just watching them play for now. She took some pictures from afar, but she wasn't satisfied with that. She wanted something more close up and personal.
Two hours later the practice was done and the players were returning to their locker room. Katie had managed to get inside the locker room. It hadn't been easy. Lucky for her, breaking certain protection spells was her strong point. She watched the players change into their normal robes. There was no harm in looking. Most of the team left in a big group, which left her with Marcus Flint. She snapped a photo.
"Who's there? Who's bold enough to take a picture of me?"
Katie hid when she heard his words. She didn't want her work stolen from her. She cast an invisibility charm on her camera and decided to face him.
"I am and I took the picture. You're not getting your hands on my camera."
"Bell?"
"What's it to you?"
"I thought I smelled mudblood."
"I thought I smelled troll."
"Oh, the mudblood strikes back."
Katie's eyes narrowed. "Now that I have what I came for I'll just be going," she replied, as she started to take a few steps back.
Marcus whipped out his wand. "Where do you think you're going? You're not leaving this locker room with my picture."
"Who's going to stop me? You?" she snorted.
Marcus took two big steps forward almost lunging at Katie, but she managed to be just out of his reach. He sneered at her and took a swipe at her. His intent was to scare her and it worked. She flinched, giving him enough time to catch up to her. Now his hand enclosed her wrist tightly.
"Let go!"
"No! Give me my damn picture or I'll break your wrist."
He tightened the hold he had on her and this increased her pain. She winced and made her camera visible again. He forced her to hand it over and once it was all said and done he pulled her forward. Their faces were an inch apart, a malicious smile growing on Marcus' face.
"Next time you take a picture of me, I'll make sure I don't go so easy on you Bell. You'll be wishing you had Johnson and Spinnet here to help you."
He released her and she knew this was all part of the sport to him. Next time he wouldn't catch her. Next time she would be ready for him.
